Seems I am right on the edge of regular and HD .....
2003 Speedy - currently weigh 260lbs + gear, but losing.... but even when I reach my hopeful goal weight.... I will probably be still 210-220 + gear. I almost never ride 2-up.... if at all.
My goal is a better ride, trying to absorb the Frost Heaves on our lovely NJ roads... I honestly dont think the bike rides bad now..... but the bone-jarring bumps suck.....
I have read everything I can between the BA and the RAT forums...... seems the 412's would be enough..... but quite a few comments say the the 412's just dont help the bone-jarring stuff too much. So must I go to the 440's to help with the stupid Frost Heaves?
I will also say...... I am a recreational rider...... average miles per year is maybe 2000miles.... thats it. So if I dont need to spend the money on the 440's that would be nice...... but if I have to..... I have to.
.
So... 412, 412HD, 440????

I really like my 412 HD, and I stay under the 220 lb mark. You won't go wrong either way, upgrading from the stock shocks is one of the best things you'll do. I would probably like to go to the 440's, but the price difference is pretty big.

I run 412 HD s on my traveling bike and no matter what load I'm carrying it stays on the first (softest setting), frost heave, wash board roads cause me no control problems, but do pound my lower innards to a state of absolute discomfort (I gotta whiz again?). You (and I) need rear shocks with rebound dampening. I will be upgrading to 440 s or Hagon s or even better if I can find the money. Ricor will make you a purpose built set as will a few other shock companies. I feel your pain, my brother.

So.... you understand my issue.... For the 2000 miles I ride a season.... If the 412's help the Harsh stuff 50% and the 440's help 80% .... then I am OK with the 412's.... but if the 412's do nearly nothing for the harsh stuff, then it looks like my only choice is the 440's....

There are a lot of members on this forum with the higher end accessories, perhaps they will add some clarity here. I like my 412 s just fine until I get on a long stretch of wash board, expansion joint and frost heaved highway. A few two laners I rode in the midwest recently are firmly forever etched in my mind as a really bad decision as to route planning.

Don't know about the 412's. But I was informed about the Hagon Nitros when I "un-lowered" my bike. They are very sweet and I have yet to even start playing around with all the adjustments possible. A definite improvement in rideability & comfort right out of the box.
Blue/White 2007 TBA, Thruxton needles, Unifilter, AI removed, Polaris Bellmouth, Bubs, Nology Coils/wires, Lightbar, Ricor Intiminators, Hagon Nitros, Tall Sissy Bar w/luggage rack, Dart flyscreen & Lowers. 130 Mains, TrueGel Battery MG12-BS.

Yes..... I have read that one....
leaning toward the 412's just based on the miles I actually put on the bike each season....
The next question would be.... at 260lbs..... I am guessing the I would need the HD's?

I wanted to add that I would have considered the 418's if they looked more like our stock shocks with the shrouded spring coil at the top.

I got a set of the 440s sitting in a box in my garage. I had mine replaced about 2 years ago cause one of them leaked and they wanted both shocks back. They sent me brand new updated 440s and I rode with them for about 3 months. I am selling them cause I am parting out stuff off my Sppedmaster that I rarely ride since getting the Trophy.Anyway, if you want to check them out for a day at the NorEaster, have at em and make me an offer. You WILL want them after riding the Finger Lakes with us.
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

To be honest, unless you are doing a lot of 'technical riding'... that is to say you are pushing man and machine, I wouldn't even worry about it. I can do that kind of mileage in a weekend all the while riding on the edge of the envelope. I need better shocks to survive! You on the other hand might be alright, considering your riding habits.
Live to love, love to live.
