If you can afford the expense, changing out the filter at mid interval (3000 miles) couldn't hurt, but, yea, change it all out after 6000, oil is cheap compared to a prematurely worn out engine. I use Purolator "Pure One" (probably overkill) o. filters, as they have the lowest micron ratings, but it's my bike and I got my ways.
