Ok, so I am riding to Sturgis, meeting up with my friends from Miami, these are all HD cult members...they have fabulous accessories...some of them even on the bike...I digress. Anyway, one had already purchased a new street road bob king big bobber whatevertheheck specifically for the trip...good God (no offense to any ladies reading; but can you get a little more chick?). Anyway, yet another buddy traded his road king (which for an HD was a nice bike) for the same new touring bike; but wait there is more. He said that the cost of his 15K maintenance made it a better option to buy a new bike? So I couldn't help myself, I had to ask, what all needed done at 15K? He said the was $3500 worth of work, new seat, new tires, NEW ENGINE MOUNT???? and I think some tranny work....I was gobsmacked. I mean with what you pay for an HD (I say you, cause I sure ain't biting on that bait) and their resale value, I would think they would hold up better. Once I am done this trip to Sturgis, I will be at the 15K mark with my bonnie Bonnie, I am at 10K now....so far I have replaced the front pads and the spark plugs... I sure hope she will hold together for another 5K (I plan on being buried with that bike....if I have said so already)

That's insane.....I have some HD cult friends (I'm sure we all have that cross to bear) and I am always amazed at the level of vibration they experience just sitting there (not to mention actually riding). It's no wonder you have to replace everything at 15k - half of it has probably already shaken off by then.

@hasso, I love it when we go to a rally and everyone pays attention to my bike, and blows theirs off (cause everyone has seen an over priced, and apparently poorly made, bike) maybe that is why they got the newest one they make, so someone will pay attention the their ride...dang I sound mean LOL

I rode down to DC yesterday with some cultists - and, true to form, my bike got LOTS of looks and questions - theirs were all of the "same old same old" harleys. (and I've hardley done anything to mine yet....) I think they were a little annoyed....

Fiona (my bike) has now been dubbed "the gin burner" by them. I can think of worse names, I guess

@toughluck55 I swear I am getting a t shirt made with the triumph logo on the front and 'YES, THEY STILL MAKE THEM' on the back.

Just called my friend. He said his Ultra 15k was a very general check of all systems and all fluids changed. It was $450 and that included brake pads.

I have heard the 12000mi Triumph one is 600 bucks cause of valve shimming. Is that correct? I don't do the shop, they just make me yell and suffer from high blood pressure.

Your rear tire will be showing cords when you get back.
'Now' would be a good time to replace it.

So I couldn't help myself, I had to ask, what all needed done at 15K? He said the was $3500 worth of work, new seat, new tires, NEW ENGINE MOUNT????

Thats why I don't ride them anymore- to be honest engine mounts should last about 40k...but some don't.....
One of the guys in my club has one running 55k miles but thats an exception.
Mine blew 3 gearboxes in 25 k miles(1450 2003 Wide glide)....on the credit side it was pretty easy to service myself.....but there are big design faults to live with-especially the chain driven twin cams which spit the tensioner blade backing into the oil pump...HD keep saying its sorted, but I'm not taking any more chances with their promises.....
Which again is why I now ride a TBA.

I do not know that much about the latest models but rode on the dark side for many years mainly with the 1340 evolution.
I used to trade them at 35,000k as that was about the point that the engine base gasket started to leak and not long after the cam bearings would begin to rattle etc. I deduced this from experience with other riders so avoided the problems although to be fair I have seen the odd one do big miles without any problems!

Hey Benny - is that $1000 each major service or for the two? Which shop did you use? I think I'll try and do as much servicing as I can myself.

970 miles to St. Louis MO from Miami. If they plan on taking two days to get to St Louis, I bet they arrive around noon on the third day. Good luck on them being on time! Missouri is notorious for high cross winds. And the heat. omg. Hope you guys are planning on being on the road before first light every day.

Going to Sturgis you need to be prepared for almost any kind of weather conditions. When I rode out there in 09 it was very cold. The four days that I was in Sturgis it never got above 64 degrees, with a low the first night of 45 degrees. On the way back home I even ran into snow going across Colorado. I didn't experience any real heat until I got into southern Kansas and Oklahoma. Florida was cooler than Oklahoma.

this Saturday I was at a graduation party for a friend of mines kid. About a dozen of his relatives work for HD in Milwaukee, some engineers, some workers. Anyway, I rode my speedmaster to this party, and while it looked like a full HD gear leather convention, turns out I was the only that was actually there on a motorcycle. I pulled into a shady spot to park and drew a crowd pretty quick (although felt some were tricked into thinking it was a new HD of some sort because it just sounds so cool ). The usual triumph questions we have all heard, then a guy who said he is a engineering manager at HD declares the bike must be an orginal that was restored because triumph was put out of bussiness by HD years ago! I said your absolutly right, it is a '05 motorcycle, he says 1905?, I said yes, its a 1905 with 4 valves per cyclinder and double overhead cams, what year did HD come out with those features? That shut down the expert and got a few laughs.
I laughed a bit myself later on watching all these people in their HD branded clothes, bandanas and leather getting into their mini vans and SUVs to leave.

I did my 12k service at about 14k and divided it into 3 services so I could afford it, and a new front tire. I still haven't done the third part and just went over 20,000 miles.

I still have to do my 12k just went over 25k. I will get around to it one day. I figure oil, brakes, chains, tires and ride it. The shims are still talking to me like they did 10k back. As long as they are chattering they don't scare me.

No loss of power and not too loud. Its when you cant hear the tappets you need to worry.

Me too, got 24k on it and didn't check the shims. Wonder what harm could be done?

I did my 12k service but am now at about 27k with no more checks,I will soon. Wendy is at 19k I think and haven't check those valves yet either.

I'd normally do my own servicing except the shims (darn new fangled invention).....but I just had a call from my supplying dealer....y'see I'd had a survey from the factory asking how I found the bike and dealer 1 year on..so I told them the bike is great, not so the dealer and I listed my reasons......
within 10 minutes the dealer was on my phone apologising profusely and offering me a free service as a goodwill gesture.
Well, at 9k Its not due another service till 12K -but I was about to change the oil and filter as I usually do midway betwen services.

So the dealer has offered to do this + check/reset valves as needed.
That restored my faith a little.....
