An internationally known knifemaker from Orangeburg County died in a motorcycle accident Wednesday afternoon.

Walter Wells Collins, who was known as "Blackie," died in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash about eight miles outside Batesburg, according to reports from the S.C. Highway Patrol and Lexington County Coroner's Office.

The 71-year-old was traveling west on U.S. 178 when his Triumph went off the right side of the road and struck a guardrail, according to the Highway Patrol. He was wearing a helmet. The collision is still under investigation.

The Florence native moved to Woodford in 1981. He was a well-known knife and cutlery design engineer, mostly for the sporting goods industry. He had also served on Woodford Town Council.
