I recently got in on the last batch of SS pipes and have been running them for about 1 1/2 months. Now, I always thought they were WAY too loud with an ear piercing bark only a deaf person at 1000 yards could appreciate. The recent Nelson RAT Raid proved to be an effective place for SS pipe loudness comparisons and when run against all the others at the Raid, mine were BY FAR the loudest pipes there. BY FAR!

Meanwhile I have my TORs back on the bike. I'll take the SSs apart soon to try to find out what's going on but if any of you get your pipes from the new batch mounted, be sure to let me know if yours too are as loud as the Space Shuttle taking off!

The weird thing is that they idle quiet. When you rev it your eardrums get obliterated.

Could one you guys (John, Z?) mount your new pipes temporarily just to see if they are like mine? Maybe it's got something to do with the new batch. I emailed Dale and await his reply... I simply can't run them like this.

I plan on working on Bollox this weekend and as soon as it's running I'll put my new pipes on. I don't want to mess with Reboot until Bollox is running again.

They really are loud. But Keith, I think all you need here is a little discipline. They idle pretty quiet, you just need to resist rapping the throttle after hours or early morning and waking up your neighbors.

I have gutted Forans and they too are very loud but if I am careful I can ride quietly as they idle quietly. I have been pulled up by Police on many occasions for breast tests and never ever been harrased for noise. Yet on jap bikes with loud exhausts I have been singled out.

Do they come apart to allow for re-packing? If so, you should have a look inside. They may have forgotten to pack your ones or only packed very lightly. If they were closing down they may have got less diligent on quality control. Get some more muffler fibreglass or SS wool from a muffler shop and pack more in. Note: don't use domestic fibreglass or SS wool - they aren't designed to handle the temperatures.

Never know to be too quiet! Dale usually packs them as tight as what will fit, can't imagine him slacking on that. I most often where ear plugs not just because of the exhaust but because the wind noise is too loud. Didn't realize that until I was listening to a radio that was too loud and when I got to speed I couldn't hear it any more...until I stopped and it was too loud again...mmmmm?

Calling all SS owners. I have mine apart now in an effort to find out why they are so friggin' loud compared to other SS pipes I've heard. Here's what I found inside...

The baffle is about 16" long. Is this the same as what others have in their SS pipes? Z, you've had yours out... is this the same set up as yours? And I'm wondering if that unwrapped bit at the end is the culprit causing my pipes to shatter nerves!

Would appreciate any feedback anyone can offer.

Haven't had mine apart, Keith, BUT that little bit at the end unwrapped looks like it might be enough to raise the Db's. Now you've got me wondering about mine and how much they are wrapped. Not that I've EVER been accused of being "wrapped to tight".

Mine are wrapped all the way and Id say yes, that little bit at the end is enough to make them loud.

Well, your report pretty much nails the problem I should think. And your babbles are the same length as mine... 16" or so?

Makes me wonder why... why would Dale not wrap the whole thing.

Wrapping the perforated tube (it's not a baffle) all the way will help deaden the sound. If that's not enough you could cut the perf tube off where it is welded to each end and rotate it (and re-weld) so that the louvers face towards the gas flow - that is so they will intake the gas flow much more effectively. That should make a significant difference.

I've had mine out a couple of times and even bought another set of wrapped inserts from Dale a couple of years ago. Both sets were wrapped end to end and taped. I'm about to pull mine out and completely re-wrap again with new 4-stroke baffle material. You can wrap a whole sheet on each one if you cut pieces of wire and use the wire to tightly wrap and hold them together. It should make a huge difference. Just re-wrapping myself from the factory ones made quite a difference. I like them with as much as you can wrap and get them back in. Takes all the raspyness out but keeps the great low end sound.

I replace the material about every 2 years (8K miles).

Yeah, it's that raspyness that hurts the ears and takes the fun out of it. Still can't figure why mine were not wrapped the whole length but at least now I know what needs to be done. Up here in Hicksville, I'm having a heck of a time finding similar material to what Dale used. Once I do though, I'll fix them up and run 'em again.

Be sure it is 4-stroke muffler packing. I buy Moose Fiberglass Muffler Packing from BikeBandit. It costs about $8. per sheet. You can trim the sheet to length and try to wrap (and wire) a whole sheet on each muffler insert.

The Specialty Spares have a great low end throaty sound. I think you'll be happy with the sound after repacking and properly covering the baffle inserts. It will make them quieter and the end result is a better sound IMHO.

I had to make some baffles for my pipes. They are not SS pipes, but the principal is the same.

I tried the "wrapped" baffles and I think they got louder so I made my own.

I used a 10 inch tailpiece from a sink drain available at most home improvement stores for under 5 bucks. I used a large washer and attached it to the flat end (other end is flared) cutting several "fingers" about an inch into the end of the pipe and fitting the washer in the end and bending the fingers over the washer. Then I pop riveted the fingers to the washer. I experimented some with the inside diameter of the hole in the washer and found for me the smaller the better.

I then drilled holes at the 0,90,180 270 positions around the pipe. they are evenly spaced, the same size and same number of holes in each row.

The number of holes will also determine how much back pressure you build as well as the size of the holes.

I then inserted the baffle into the INLET of the muffler pipe and secured with a small set screw.

The ID of the inlet is 1 7/8 while my baffle was 1 1/2 with a flare of 1 7/8. Just worked out like that.

I love the sound now and have restored the loss of power due to loss of backpressure. It is probably 30% quieter now and I was only out $15.00 for both baffles.

Just a thought.

My SS pipes are older and it seems that my baffle might be a little longer and of some different construction. All the same, I used a complete package of Moose on each baffle to cover the full length and I think that tamed them enough for the past 18 months or so. Getting louder now so my next attempt will be to "chamber" the pipe by locking the straight flow with a plug in the middle of the baffle length and removing the glass packing. Should be a fine experiment and I'll report on the results.

What you described is what we (in the industry) call a plug and plate - the main flow pipe is plugged forcing the gas out through the perf into the outer case - around the plug - and back into the perf. This is very restrictive. And I suspect this will be louder than your current glass packed straight-through system.

For "plug & plate" to work effectively (silencing), this in/out process would be typically repeated 2 or 3 times along the length of the muffler - but in your case that would necessitate plates to create sub-chambers. Hence "plug & plate". But inserting plates into you existing muffler is difficult.

I think the simple plug system you described may be too restrictive for our bikes - but I could be wrong. As well as being louder, it give you a different note from your current straight-through muffler (straight perf with packing) - possibly more higher notes because of the lack of packing (fibreglass absorbs the higher frequencies).

For clarity this is what we call a chambered muffler:
A chamber muffler has an expansion chamber where the gas flow into the chamber is not obstructed or restricted - it expands and then exits out through another perf (packed) tube. This would be hard to build as a modification because of the same issue with the plates mentioned above.

I don't want to hijack this thread.

I put a set of JCW turnouts on my bike and immediately noticed that I lost mid and low range power as well as a lot of popping on decel. The bike also got really poor mileage after trying several alternate maps.

I did my research and made the baffles I described above.

I then had the bike on a dyno so that the baffles (which ARE restrictive) could be tailored to suit the bike. I have a friend who has a Dyno and I could spend all the time I wanted using it.

After a lot of playing around I got the baffles to where I am getting the best low and midrange power that I can. It is about 30% quieter although I don't really have any actual DB numbers to base that on.

I know it worked very well for me and was just offering a suggestion.

At first the baffles were too restrictive so I ended up drilling more holes in them to open them up some.

Also you mentioned that the gas would be forced back into the perforations which is not the case on my bike. The gas enters the pipe and exits through the perfs (holes) and then enters another chamber, through more perfs and out the pipe.

The described baffle certainly changed the exhaust note from a very blatty sound to a much smoother note while keeping a very nice low bassy (not much other way to dexribe it) tone.

All the popping is gone and MPG is back up. Kinda sounds like a well tuned muscle car with sidepipes now.

I haven't had any luck finding the posts, but a few years there were a couple of people who used washers to modify the inserts/baffles in their SS pipes. One person welded a washer to the front of the insert, basically making the inner diameter hole of the insert smaller than it currently is. The other person did similar to the back end of the insert, and used a screw so that he could easily remove it from the end of the pipe if he wanted to. I wish I could remember who posted these, or find their posts. I honestly don't even remember what they posted about the end results either, but I think both said they thought it quieted them down a little. I'll keep searching and link the threads if I find them...

I repacked my SS pipes a couple of years ago, but it's time to do it again. I don't notice what I'd call a raspy sound, but it starts to sound like a magnified, hollow, metallic echo that bounces around inside my helmet even with earplugs in. Hopefully repacking will take care of it.
