With Polaris running the show, they very well could make it! I wonder if the new Indians wind up being the "high priced spread" of their line up, as opposed to the more affordable Victory's they're currently selling. Hope they don't just build a Victory and change the tin and paint to "make" it an Indian. But then again, at this point in time, what makes an "Indian"?

Very good observation. After decades of no real Indian, your question is spot on.

I personally don't think Indian really exists anymore, it is just a name now. We will see if Polaris can change that and give it an identity again. I liked the survey they sent out to see what people think makes an Indian. In my opinion it will need to have it's own frame style, engine, trans , and primary style, and it's own tins.

Looks to me like it's got Victory splashed all over it. Someone stated the Victory's are "very affordable" . I hope that was a tongue -n- cheek comment

That's silly. Not even close to a true artist's rendering.
The Polaris/Victory dealer meeting is coming up. We'll know more soon enough. But don't expect to see new Polaris Indians for some time.

Sorry, I still don't get why Polaris purchased Indian, regardless of what the Polaris spokesman said in that article, a portion of which is below: __________________________________________________________
Mark Blackwell, Vice President of Polaris Motorcycles, sees it this way: “Victory is the New American Motorcycle, appealing more to enthusiasts than die-hard bikers, while Indian appeals to the other end of the spectrum.” Would that make it the Old American Motorcycle? Blackwell calls it a bookend strategy, with Victory and Indian at opposite ends of the Polaris shelf. Both are relatively small players in the big picture. Separately, each brand has its weaknesses. But together, Polaris will own a much bigger slice of the cruiser/tourer pie. ___________________________________________________________
Nope, sorry, I don't get it.
Both Victory and Indian will be higher priced large-displacement V-Twin Cruisers. So what that one of them will now supposedly have some "heritage". I don't think that that will be enough to draw a sufficient enough number of big dollar spenders(and Indians will most likely be even more expensive than Victorys are) in order to justify this second lineup of basically the same style of motorcycle.
Yep, it still all goes back(or will go back...that's a prediction) to Victory not having a lower priced "entry-level" motorcycle such as H-D has with the Sportsters, and which help draw a greater number of people into their showrooms.
(...however, that being said, I DO wish them luck and hope my predictions are wrong)

One thing I don't agree with on Dwight, is that they are the same bike. If that pic at the top of the page Moe listed is anything like what they produce in the end then I would buy one long before considering a Victory. If it comes out looking more like the drawing then I would have to agree, same bike, no real draw.

i would like to see them keep the bottlecap engine, and keep ness out of the picture and there might be hope. if they can come to the table with an affordable chief then a sweet little scout maybe they can make it happen. but if they take Indian the way of Victory Vision they are in trouble

Yep newt...or in other words, if they still put that little Indian Chief head figure on the front of the bike, and stay away from makin' the front of the bike look like the head of Bozo the Clown...like they did with the Visions, right?!

You can tell Victory owns it now, that picture is very Nessy looking. Wonder when they will make a tourbike that looks like a '39 Lincoln Zephyer?

Maybe they bought them to simply be the other American motorcycle company. Maybe they don't want another iconic name out there with Harley unless they own it. With the money Polaris has buying Indian was a drop in the bucket just to own the name.
I think they will keep the Indian lines. I don't think they expect to sell very many. I don't think they care to sell very many. They are still around 10,000 units or less a year with Victory. Just a small little fraction of the money Polaris makes. As long as its in the black Victory will keep making bikes. They are not under-capitalized by a long shot.

Good points.
I'm pretty sure that Polaris will maintain the traditional Indian lines but add some Polaris engineering as well as lowering the price through reduced manufacturing and material costs.
Bottom line, we shouldn't expect radical styling changes to the Indian line any time soon.

Styling, no, they shouldn't. In my view that's pretty much why the Gilroy CA-based Indian Company and all subsequent Indian holding companies were after from the very beginning...they wanted to resurrect that valanced-fender 1940s Deco look that almost all people remember as Indian's trademark look.
There'd be no reason for Polaris to have even purchased the company if their ultimate plan was to change the styling aspect of these motorcycles away from that basic look.
Now, engineering, that's a WHOLE other animal here. I'm going to assume that Polaris' intent is to fix all the problems that have filtered down from the Gilroy-based Indians through to what is essentially a little changed design from that to the present. Problems which primarily consist of excessive vibration on the Gilroy-based Power Plus engine design.
Once Polaris rectifies THAT issue ESPECIALLY, then maybe they'll be able to satisfy their intended targeted customers.

i think you might be right man, but also i think with the $$ Polaris has and the R&D that has previously been done, if they can work out the few glitches that has plaqued the name up till now. good on them, but i also think they are going to have to adjust the price to bring it down to h.d. range they might have a chance in makeing it work. its funny if you think about it. AMF spent a great deal of money in R&D for the evo engine and then willie and the boys buy the co. back and bring out that engine. the boys in gilrow spent a lot of money in r&d then the holding co. and now Polaris buys it with very little to do but minor tweeks and adjust the price and BINGO its a big success for Polaris. pretty smart

I'll be honest, the Chief Vintage does tug at me a little. But for that kind of money, I could buy a new Speedy, A new America and a new Thunderbird and still have money left over for goodies!

I just checked them out and I think they did a good job on them, several of the packages appeal to me if I was in the market for an over priced machine.

Polaris will do fine with the purchase of the Indian brand. There won't be a true Polaris Indian released until the 2013 MY at least. And you can bet there will be improvemets in the design. Just don't expect a huge drop in price or an entry-level Indian for some time. Polaris intends the Indian to remain a premium brand.
Also, the 2012s you see now are simply the remainder of the Stellican line. I'm looking forward to the 2013 Indian lineup!

They have that potential with the Indian line, don't forget the Scout. With a light weight lower priced Scout type bike with an up to date 45 to 61 cubic inch engine, they could be on the right track. It was the Scout much more than the Chief and 4 cylinder that carried Indian through the great depression.

That green and white classic! With some good supports that could be wall art. I love it!
But, if I ever buy another bike my next one will say Thunderbird on the tank. I could buy two of them for the same price as previously noted.

I just hope they don't ugly it up. The only good looking victory is the Hammer Sport. I really hope they reach back to the old days and take the design cues from that.

Very point point, Ed. Yep, I think if Polaris could in short order bring out a smaller displacement Scout model, maybe something around the 1000-1200cc range, I think that would help bring more people into their local Victory/Indian dealerships.
However, I have to wonder if they could keep such an animal's price tag within the range of what H-D sells their 1200cc Sportster line...somewhere in the $9,000-$11,000. If they could, then I think they could have a success on their hands.
Btw, you do know that the Gilroy Indian line did have a Scout model, but it was basically just the Chief model without the fully valanced fenders, and it wasn't all that much cheaper than were the high-priced Chiefs.

You keyboard captains of industry need to stop dreaming. You're as bad as the guys on the Victory forums! lol For the near future at least you can expect the Indian to remain a premium brand, as per Polaris' press releases. Let's give it a couple-three years and follow up.

Hmmmmm...then maybe that's what I'm thinking of then, Thanassis. Maybe they called their "affordable" model(notice the quotation marks there ) the Spirit and not the Scout, eh?!
