Do any of you fine folks have a sleep number bed? If so, which version and can you share a few positives and negatives or things to look for, etc. My wife and I are considering a new bed but I'm getting discouraged by the reviews of sleep numbers and apparent lack of customer support. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Slept on one at a friend's house. It was pretty nice. I have a top 'o the line tempurpedic at home (I inherited, couldn't afford it myself) that I like but some people get too warm on them. Don't know about support, etc., but I got a good night's sleep on it.

When my son bought his first house a few months back, I bought a good air mattress (about $70) at a box store. It was one of the ones that are about 18-20 inches high. I liked it. It was similar in feel to the sleep number

My mother and father in law bought a sleep number and returned it. I too would recommend the Tempurpedic or a generic version over sleep number.

I've got one. Had it since 2002. It's queen size. Don't remember the model, but I'm guessing they've changed since then anyway. It was the perfect solution for the wife and I. She likes to sleep on a mushy bed, I like firm. She usually has her side set at 30-40 and mine is always 100. Haven't had any issues with it for the most part. The original foundation cracked after a couple years and they replaced it free of charge no issues yet with the replacement. No problems besides that. I've moved several times since owning it and it super easy to move.
Only downfall is accessories are pricey. Wife would like to replace the pillowtop, but they want like $400. I think not!
My buddy has a temperpedic that he loves so check those out too, but IMHO if you guys like different levels of firmness you can't beat the sleep number.
Good Luck!

I stayed at a hotel a couple weeks ago that had a sleep number bed. I didnt really like it. On lower numbers, it was softer, it was just not as inflated.

My wife and I have had one for a little more than a year. It's ok. I don't know that its worth as much as they get, but then, I'm kinda a tight a** when it comes to stuff like this. (Now, if it was CHROME!, then....) We got it through the "display model/reconditioned program, saving about $300. If you're on a budget, ask about that. It's usually always available, though a store site is gonna steer you into a new unit. Go online for the cheaper price. My wife likes it mushy, I like mine fairly firm. One mistake I made, I didn't get the controls that have the number visible on them, that was a mistake. We just inflate until we like the feel, but the lighted number controls would be handier. Forget the plastic "foundation". Thats just a money maker for them. Just use a regular box spring for support or plywood over planks, works just fine for less than half the money. Get at least the "thinner" pillow top, it helps distribute the "load" better. Haven't had any mechanical problems so far. I give it a "thumbs up".

Rich is right, screw that plastic box that they sell as a foundation. Chris, don't you remember, you made our platform bed for our sleep number mattress?

It stands to reason that the sleep number will leak eventually. I tried one out, liked it, but listened to friends and bought the Temperpedic instead a few months ago. Ours is one of the firmer ones that cost a little more ($3K), but we both enjoy it.

Dave, Ya, I know you had a sleep number but wanted to hear some other folks opinions too. I will talk to you soon about it. I'm looking into sleep number and tempur-pedic. There's a lot of choice out there.

Sleep number bed = high tech air mattress. Love my tempur-pedic which I'd recommend highly. Heck with the cost, you won't be buying another for a long time.

I have a generic Tempurpedic. In the summer it does get HOT. Unless you keep your bedroom ice cold it will be hard to get used to. On that note,, almost any new bed I sleep in requires 2 to 3 weeks to get used to.
I don't know about the high dollar foam beds, but after 5 yrs, the memory sorta does wear out. The center of the bed is firmer and taller. Not visually, but when you lay down on it, you can tell where each person normally sleeps.

I have had a sleep number bed (Cal King) for over 6 years. It was the second one down from the their top of the line bed. It is very comfortable, and has at least a 2" pillow top that uses the same material that a Tempurpedic bed is made of. The memory foam weights more than the rest of the bed combined.
The dual control is great, and you can make the bed as soft or hard as you like.
I have had two failures with the air pump. Both times Select Comfort sent me a replacement at no charge. The second time they even sent me a replacement air bladder just in case (because the air pump was failing on only one side).
Overall I am very happy with the bed, and I expect to get about twice the life out of it that you would normally get from a standard mattress.

+1 on those comments. Wow – I’ve watched this thread grow over the past several days and my take-away is there are a disproportionally large number of kitty-boys out there. After leaving home nearly 3 years ago and settling in what my friends referred to as; The ‘Chal-Ack’ (Half chalet and half shack), I slept on the floor atop a chunk of foam rubber, a few blankets and a worn pillow, which I often recall and refer to as ‘my rag bed’ – Not at all unlike that of a common house pet, but without one of those cute baskets. I did this for a year and a half, during which time the back pain left, the aches subsided, and that annoying click in my knees completely disappeared. Having shed the guilt and shame that brought me to that level of existence, I’ve since risen above all that having first acquiring a bed and then a townhouse (Actually, I now question the importance of leaving that ‘simple’ unobstructed life). In short, I suppose what I’m saying is the best sleep I’ve had in my adult life was the most primitive. Not sure if the cause was sleeping on the floor or the unencumbered lifestyle – but, jumping down on the floor would be a cheap and easy stab a good rest without finding a shack to live in. Just sayin’…

Consumer Reports had good things to say about Costco's generic tempurpedics. We recently bought a King for around $800 delivered. It was compressed and strapped for shipping, so we laid it out and cut the straps - instant bed. It's excellent. Hope it lasts a while.
This is our 4th bed in 20 years of marriage. I'm not sure if that's good or bad?

Something about "generic Temurpedic" doesn't sound right. Kind of like "generic Triumph". Lesser expensive copies are just that. My Tempurpedic is over 6 years old and is showing no signs of change. I live in Florida and I don't notice the bed being hotter than my conventional previous bed. The Tempurpedic comes with a 20-year warranty. I doubt the cheaper "generics" do.
We are planning to buy an RV this year and plan to get it with the cheapest mattress offered and replace it with a Tempurpedic.
