With a 20 year plus history of playing RPGs such a Dungeons and Dragons and Star Wars as of late I sometimes view aspects of life as an adventure into the unknown. You had better have the right gear chosen and know how to get to it in case something happens. So what sort of gear do you carry with you when you go out on the road whether for a long ride or just down the block? I am assuming you have medium size saddle bags and prehaps a toolkit/patch kit.

I usually have a back pack and in it are a small assortment of tools; snubby combo wrench set 10-17mm, alen wrench set, small adjustable, leatherman, duct tape, electrical tape, and a few zip ties. Depending on weather i may bring some extra clothing and/or rain gear. 2 Flat bungies and rope. A bottle of water and a granola bar.

My input is probably not what you are looking for. I am a minimalist I carry a mutitool and a bottle of water. Now I do take my pipe with a bowl or two worth of 1Q or frog morton.

Always bring tools to access the battery. A good idea is to bring tools to access the top tube of the frame, i.e., those tools needed to remove the tank. So far the tool kit is rather small. To round off the kit, bring those tools that you used the most recent time you worked on your bike. Huh? Say you changed your oil. Well carry the wrench for the drain plug. Or say you had to adjust the clutch cable. Carry those tools as well.

Basic stuff eh?

Tips: Whenever you work on your bike, tag each tool with a bit of that blue painter's tape. That way you'll know which tools are needed in a hurry to work on your bike. And by simply looking at them you can decide what you want to carry with each ride.

Most stuff can't be fixed on the side of the road. However, you can fix a lot of carb issues. You can't fix a coil or pick-up coil or igniter. UNLESS you carry a spare. Carrying at least one spark plug and the socket/ratchet for it, is always good idea. Your cell phone is paramount.

Carry rain gear. Carry a hat. Carry water.

Take a gander at Chy's tool roll. He was able to do a lot of stuff with that this past SWTF rally.

+1 for everything above, as well as extra squirrel condoms and a spare headlight bulb. Either one can leave you stranded!

Love or hate the AMA they have the best (and cheapest) roadside assistance around. For, I believe $39/year they cover you, your spouse and any children, even if they are away at college. I'm married with 3 kids living away from home. AAA wants something like $49 for you and $20 for each additional living in your home. I'm surprised I haven't been dropped for excessive use. Between the whole crew we call them 4-5 times a year. They've shown up in the boonies even when it took them an hour to locate someone who would come out so far.

Always put my spare key somewhere on the bike . Lost mine once for a while and got stressed for half an hour till I found it. Left in the bike and it was handed in when I went to the ACE cafe for the day. atb geoff

Another thing about the AMA roadside coverage is they cover any of your family vehicles even if you are not operating them at the time of distress. web page

A cell phone is all i carry. No point me taking any tools, wouldn't know what to do with them anyway. And besides, Triumphs don't break down!

Mine's never let me down either, but I always carry some paranoia around with me everywhere, and the small cach of tools compliments that!

In GA... rain gear, always rain gear, cell phone, a bungee net, and a hideaway emergency backback (wads down to deck of card size). A small set of basic tools. On longer trips I add extra headlight bulb, oil filter (thanks, Airguy), and scads of zip ties.

Yep. OR, you can go REAL "Old School" and just throw the Sears Catalog into your bag!

(...though I suppose those ARE gettin' kinda hard to find anymore, huh?!)

Oh and + 2 on the travel pack of wipes! I also like to carry this http://www.antimonkeybutt.com/

I see they have Safari towels also, this might be a good addition depending on how "outback" you are going.

Tool wise, I have found my most used stuff being:
cell as mentioned.

Flat and phillips screw drivers
Dykes (no pun intended)
Allen set
common size metric scockets
" " " open end box end wrenches
2cresent wrenches (big enough for rear axel bolt)
allen wrench for front axel bolt.
and now after a recent experiance FUSES!!!
KEEP 10 AMP IF NOTHING ELSE SINCE THIS IS THE SIZE FOR YOUR IGNITION SYSTEM!! Yep, I was caught w/ my pants down by one.

ditto on electrical tape and zip ties.
I always have a few bungies in my bags.
my homade set of jumper cabels. Saved a buddy, but also burned my 10 amp fuse! LOLOL as mentioned.
add or subtract as needed.

(the day you dont carry your tools is the day you will need them)

Don't use news paper. A small mess can be spead to a proportion that the epa is required, and the ink will stain your bottom.

I think beamer got it best, I carry most of that on trips out of the area, plus some disposable gloves, spare plugs and a cheap ass multimeter.

Cheap ass multimeter.........ummmmm, WHAT?!

Hey, I had heard findin' one of those ass multimeter for a reasonable price was a thing-of-the-past, dude. Yep, they're ALL pretty expensive nowadays, I hear!

(...oh, wait a minute...a "cheap-ass multimeter" is what ya meant, huh?!...sorry...never mind)

Well, up here at my place and just outside the Nelson RAT Raid, Friar just saved Larry's (05woody) ass by carrying a spare CDI!! I need to start carrying my spare clutch cable. It might not be YOUR ass you save but someone else's instead!

I carry a good tool kit, always has been used for someone else out on the road though. Also like Moe said, the tool you used last for putting something on the bike. Also a flare for the traffic, and a very well stocked first aid kit. The American red cross makes one that fits perfectly on bikes. I add a to it a bit, and it's definitely come in handy a few times.

Hey thats a good idea.... a first aid kit. The one I take camping would be great. A small bottle of bacardi 101, a razor blade, a tube of superglue, and a roll of duct tape wraped up in a clean t-shirt.

Duct tape to secure the parts that shouldn't move, WD-40 to free up the parts that should move. Cash for the places that still take it and an ATM card for the places that don't. A sparkplug wrench and, if it is a very long trip, the wrenches needed to adjust the chain. A bit of wire, a few alligator clips and some electrical tape.
Oh, and a dragon slayer sword for just in case.
