WOW...... Didn't someone recently post about going to a rally, and being in a loud pipe contest. Every one replied how cool and fun it must have been. Now we have an argument about loud pipes. Is Sybil a member on this forum or what. To boot all this based on a sound bite not reality. I almost said something about this very thing in the other thread but didn't want to get it started. Besides he had fun and that's all that mattered in that thread.
Apparently this is your first time in the Lounge, if not on this site altogether. It's called "topic drift," and we have some real masters of it here.

(...just kiddin' Ian...sorry, I couldn't resist!)
Thing is Dwight, some of the people I hang with will shoot people and others have. One who did shoot a guy that died from it was even a member of this board and is currently in prison for it. He got 15 to 40, I visit him a couple times a year.

What a jerk. As if whingin about motorcycles having loud exhausts behind the safety of his little computer entitles him to belittling real bikers who if he came face to face with he would probally run away and hide crying like a little girl. Oh he is a big man speaking out. What a hero. Loud pipes save lives, simple as that. Nothing gets the attention of a cager better than a quick bark of the exhaust.
Get over it and pick on people who use lawn mowers and edge trimmers because they are far more annoying and not as likely to rip your head off.

I think my point may have been missed here. Point being its fun and cool to be in a loud pipe competition, but not ride a bike with loud pipes. That's a bit of a conundrum.

The saddest, most pitiful patients I encountered during my paramedic days were often large men clad in black leather with a chain on their wallet pitifully sitting on the curb crying their eyes out while whimpering that they didn't know that someone would hit/club/stab them if they (fill in the blank). I can remember my partner asking one big, bad guy to stop whimpering as it was embarrassing. I have learned over the years that the guys who find the need to act bad ass rarely are. My old SEAL friends could pass as overly fit accountants. They felt no need to act out.

It is rarely the guys in all leather it more often the ones in old jeans and worn out leather jacket or T shirt. The ones all in leather are usually weekend wanna be types trying to look tough. The quiet ones watching are usually the dangerous ones from my experience.

So what are you trying to say? You obviously are all knowing because you were a paremedic. That bikers are all soft because you encountered some pussies who wore leather? I was referring to the person who wrote the article not you. You obviously agree with it though and that is entirely your right. It is also my right to have my opinion. If you want the motorcycle you ride to sound like a sewing machine then that is your right. Just don't tell me to make mine quiet. I can't believe you had to mention that you have some friends that are Navy Seals so that somehow makes you an expert on toughness.

Not all bikers (motorcycle enthusiasts?) clad themselves in black leather. I come from a military family. I was in the USN and planned a career but was injured and NPQd (not physically qualified). My sister was a supply officer for a SEAL team. I had the honor to know several of them. Hence the reference. BTW, those guy work very hard and, at the end of the day, go home to their families. Not much into the bar scene. Can't even imagine one decked out in black leather. They don't act tough and if you ask them their job they'll probably just say 'sailor'.

As the nation has been on a war footing for most of the past decade I think most people have a friend or relative in Special Forces in one of the branches of service. As I used to coach several sports, many of 'my kids' have gone on to serve in such units, though I don't know of any who have become SEALs.

On Thursday nights I go to a place called Texas Pride BBQ. On any given Thursday they will host 100-300 bikes. Food, beer, live band etc. Fun place. Anyhow we are all sitting outside getting some food. About every two minutes or so another guy will idle through and blip his throttle to loud it up a bit on a 3 second interval until his arrival has been property announced. One of the ladies there yelled out to the table twisting her wrist as if working her throttle "I just got it!" She then worked her wrist a different way saying "Now I get it! they can do that in public not this!" I don't think there was a dry eye within 20 feet. 5 or 6 guys changed areas. Obviously they were also public throttle blippers. Loud pipes don't save lives. The jury is not out on that. How dare you not put open headers on the Lexus to keep your family safe. Its a silly assertion. They worked it hard on the Prius for safety finding no reason to add big noise to the vehicle. They were naturally worried about no motor or exhaust note. I drilled my pipes on the Triumph. I like a little noise. I even have an old Kerker on one of the antiques. I think we all know the ones we are talking about. They are the same ones on a group ride you would not follow for a few hundred miles. Whenever I hear one I think of the lady at bike night and have a little laugh. Southpark may be right. Now we can start the lawnmower thread where that guy is just as bad. etc.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

Here is what I found HP0370 LD 477 An Act To Reduce Noise Pollution by Requiring Mufflers on Motorcycles Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows: Sec. 1. 29-A MRSA §1912-A is enacted to read: § 1912-A. Motorcycle exhaust systems 1. Exhaust mufflers. A person may not operate a motorcycle manufactured after December 31, 1982 unless it is equipped with an exhaust muffler bearing the federal Environmental Protection Agency required labeling applicable to the motorcycle's model year in accordance with 40 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 205, Subparts D and E. 2. Penalty. A person who violates this section commits a traffic infraction for which a fine of not less than $500 for the first offense, not less than $750 for a 2nd offense and not less than $999 for a 3rd or subsequent offense may be adjudged, except that if the person presents proof that the motorcycle has been brought into compliance with this section within 15 days after the citation, excluding Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, the court shall impose the fine as follows: A. For the first offense: (1) If the person does not commit a violation of this section within one year after the citation, the court shall waive the fine; or (2) If the person commits a violation of this section within one year after the citation, the court shall impose the full amount of the fine; B. For a 2nd offense: (1) If the person does not commit a violation of this section within one year after the citation, the fine is $250; or (2) If the person commits a violation of this section within one year after the citation, the court shall impose the full amount of the fine; and C. For a 3rd offense: (1) If the person does not commit a violation of this section within one year after the citation, the fine is $499; or (2) If the person commits a violation of this section within one year after the citation, the court shall impose the full amount of the fine. summary This bill requires that all motorcycles manufactured after 1982 must be equipped with an exhaust muffler bearing the federal Environmental Protection Agency required labeling applicable to the motorcycles' model year. This bill provides that a person who violates the requirement may be subject to a fine of at least $500 for the first offense, $750 for a 2nd offense and $999 for a 3rd or subsequent offense. The bill also provides that the fines may be reduced if a person brings the motorcycle into compliance within 15 business days after the citation and does not commit another violation within a year.

So the environmental protection agency sets the standards of what is acceptable and what is not. Do we vote for these guys, cause I haven't seen them on any ballot. So some none elected official is setting policies in a republic? Kind of odd I think.

Oh great...I can see it all now on my TV set comin' every two to four years....
"Rudy Kazudi, Skip Blip's opponent for the next term for the job of the EPA Commissioner, would have everyone's motorcycle sounding like a sewing machine. He also says that your grandmother wears combat boots. Would YOU trust a guy like that? Vote for Skip Blip in November!"
(...and the very next commercial...)
"Skip Blip, Rudy Kazudi's opponent for the job of EPA Commissioner, thinks people should have the right to raise the dead with the sound that their motorcycle makes. And, he thinks your dog is ugly. Would YOU trust a man like that?! Vote Rudy Kazudi for EPA Commissioner."
(...uh huh...I can see it all now!...oh goody!!!)

how can they possibly expect someone with a 30 yr old bike to have pipes from 1982?? pipes rust, or get messed up in an accident or how many other possibles are there for not having "epa" original pipes?? some mfg's dont even have replacement pipes for bikes that old, some you almost have to go aftermarket with, which will be a dieing buisness that will put more people out of work. thats kinda like telling everyone that they have to have health ins. or that every bike has to have turn signals, some didnt come with turnsignals. this is all just stupid!!!! big brother sticking his nose up my bum tends to make me real anti-govt. all together

Yep newt. As you've probably heard, that place where all "right-thinkin' 'mericans" call "The Land of Fruits and Nuts" will pretty much have a system in place in a couple of years that will force all motorcycle owners in that state to have un-modified exhaust systems.
And, ya wanna know WHY that is???
Well, ya see, ONCE AGAIN....let me REPEAT that...ONCE AGAIN...a whole lot of the reason for that is because of the NEGATIVE IMPRESSION that some of our fellow riders give to the VAST NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO DON'T RIDE MOTORCYCES, and who are FEED UP WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And ya see newt, eventually this will almost ASSUREDLY come to pass THROUGHOUT this great country of ours.
Ya see, THAT'S MY FRIGGIN' POINT HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And HELL! Even the friggin' AMA had said THIS!!!!!!!!!!
(...I mean...WHY can't you guys who like and run loud pipes on your bikes SEE that you're F'in' it up for ME and whole LOT of OTHER GUYS so that EVENTUALLY whatever SLIGHT to MODERATE modification that I or anyone else would or might want to do to MY or their bike's exhaust will be OUTLAWED!!!!!...oh, that's right, that's 'cause you don't care about anybody but yourself in THIS regard, huh?!...OR, because "there's all that OTHER noise being made by all the OTHER people, that that makes it "okay" for YOU to do the same thing", huh?!...well, NOW I "get it"!!!!!!!!!)

I give up! Some of you guys will NEVER in a million YEARS understand:
(a) The concept of "Moderation in all things"
(b) The concept of "Going along to get along"
(c) The concept that "With freedom comes responsibility"
(d) That "big and loud and in your face(or in your EARS, in this particular case!) doesn't have be the hallmark of a "freedom loving American"
(...and with that, I bid all of my "Freedom loving" fellow Americans goodbye...I'm done with BANGIN' MY HEAD AGAINST THIS FRIGGIN' WALL HERE!!!!!!!)

Last year during the annual toy run(toys for tots)and mind you this is a well organized ride police control all intersections for the entire route and last year there was roughly 14,000 bikes on it.This ride is announced months in advance so other can plan accordingly like taking a different route so your not caught in traffic for a long time. There are people and familys that will line up along the road for miles and miles to watch everyone go by.The children wave and cheer some of us bring bags of candy and toss it to the kids as we go by.Even with all this positive contribution to a very good cause last year some crabby older gentleman(term used loosly)got caught at a traffic light while the group was passing. He called the cop that was contolling traffic and started b%tching about the bikes going by to many bikes, takes to long, bike are all too loud,ect...The cop turned and walked away. He then wrote a letter to the editor of the local newpaper complaining about it all.Come to find out he was really upset about have to wait in traffic lololololol. Now here is the kicker this same pile of crap used to have a HD with pipes and used to attend the toy run,But because he was stuck in traffic and no longer can ride he thinks he can b%tch about it.Know since he lives right on my to and from work me and 2 others that ride together 1 has a HD with pretty open pipes drop the hammer everytime we go by.Yes its wrong and not something I practice but he is a exception. Heres a link for the run if you might want to take a peek http://www.ubm-usa.org/I.am sorry for such a long rant but just thought i would share that with you all Thanks for the time.

Well don't be mad about it. I don't like the ama. I agree with point a and c. D is not relevant. Now point B if you will going along to get along gets you plowed under and run over more often than not. How about if you don't like it go your own way. Really I don't much see these little americas being that loud. Mines not any louder than a lawn mower. Lawn mowers don't really bother anyone especially me. No one has ever bitched about my bike being loud. I am running open pipes too. I ride alone and with groups and nobody has ever said that my bike was too loud. I hear the other bikes in my hood when they go by ......not a problem. What I think is these people want a reason to be a crybaby. You don't give over to cry babies. I have never been disturbed by a loud motorcycle not ever even once. Neither has anyone else they just couldn't find a better diaper to crap in and cowards cringe in fear. Instead of say shut up find another ******. If they silenced motorcycles the same will move on to something else. Appeasement has never worked and never will.

My real point is this. I lived in some apartments on the north east side of Chicago. Every one there had a problem with some one else. The big amazon woman in the high heals the cross dressing couple the kids at the play ground the newly weds who could hardly not make out the old man that talked loud the mexican guys who grilled on the balcony the fat slut who had guys over all the time the guy who took his tuba with him a couple of times a week the old lady who stood outside and hailed anyone who would listen to her the children running about the ugly car the guy who sat in his window sill and blew bubbles the teen girls who sang a trio every where they went. Most of the people in that place never stop bitchin about those people. Should they have stopped? I didn't think so then and don't think so now.

Wait a minute...I lived there, too. What apartment number?

What do we have, about 4 of these threads a year? They are always a total split.
It never ends. Nobody is ever gonna change the others mind.
I don't know, one knows Navy Seals and another hangs with people who shoot people!
Now, I KNOW I said I wasn't gonna say anything else in this thread, but DOGGONE IT, I gotta say that THAT was a pretty darn funny line there, Ian!!!

Yeah Ron, at least we have some "common ground" THERE anyway, huh?!
(...and now, once again...over and out, folks)
That is pretty funny.

Actually that there would be a great idea for a sitcom.

how can they possibly expect someone with a 30 yr old bike to have pipes from 1982?? pipes rust, or get messed up in an accident or how many other possibles are there for not having "epa" original pipes?? some mfg's dont even have replacement pipes for bikes that old, some you almost have to go aftermarket with, which will be a dieing buisness that will put more people out of work. thats kinda like telling everyone that they have to have health ins. or that every bike has to have turn signals, some didnt come with turnsignals. this is all just stupid!!!! big brother sticking his nose up my bum tends to make me real anti-govt. all together

Inner city apartments can be fun especially the lower income sections. There were a lot more "normal people" who had lots of complaints against the small group of "oddities" if you will. Should they have stopped doing what they did to satisfy a group of bitter people? Those guys were of no harm or real disturbance to anyone. You see happy people make the world a better place, and the unhappy make it worse. The tyranny of the bitter will never end. They complain and complain that's what they do. They are never satisfied so you can't appease them.

You know its funny this thread has covered the sound of freedom and the look of freedom, but not the smell of freedom.
