Tonight while I am watching my UT (ultrasonic C-Scan) machine work a 4 hr. part, I started thinking of one hit wonders. Thought about compileing a good play list / CD for the road. I looked up the obvious ones from the net, but wandered around work asking people to name the first one to come to mind. Here is what I have so far:
Children of the Sun- Billy Thorp Ah Leigh – Donnie Iris Hey song - Garry Glitter Jenny – Tommy tu tone Chevy Van – Sammy Johns Safety Dance – Men Without Hats I Ran – A Flock Of Seagulls Afternoon Delight – Starland Vocal Band Sugar Sugar – The Archie’s Jessie’s Girl – Rick Springfield The Night the Lights went out in Ga. – Vickie Larance Ice Ice Baby – Vanilla Ice Um Bop - The Hansons Steal my Sunshine – LEN Boots – Nancy Sinatra
how many hounreds am I not remembering?

As did the Troggs in the '60s.
Since I'm a bit older than many of the members, I confess to knowing only a few of those 1-hit wonders listed above. Here are some from a pair of CDs I have on the Rhino label called One-Hit Wonders of the Sixties:
I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight - Barry and the Tamerlanes Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye - The Casinos Gimme Gimme Good Lovin' - Crazy Elephant Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead - The Fifth Estate The Girl From Ipanema - Stan Getz & and Astrud Gilberto Let It Out - The Hombres Everlasting Love - Robert Knight (great song, BTW) The Cheater - Bob Kuban Hang On Sloopy - The McCoys Love Can Make You Happy - Mercy Morning Girl - The Neon Philharmonic (Meet Me at) Midnight Mary - Joey Powers Walk Right In - The Rooftop Singers The Stripper - David Rose Orch. Angel Of The Morning - Merilee Rush & the Turnabouts (I like Juice Newton's better) If You Wanna Be Happy For The Rest Of Your Life - Jimmy Soul (great advice!) Expressway To Your Heart - Soul Survivors Cast Your Fate To The Wind - Sounds Orchestral You Were On My Mind - We Five Last Kiss - J Frank Wilson More - Kai Winding & Orch. (from a surfing movie in the early 60's; great tune)

Baby Got Back--Sir Mix Alot
When I was traveling for work after the SWTF, the only thing I could find on TV to watch was a one-hit wonder countdown show on VH1. Should I start rattling them off? I just gave you #1.
Couple more from the top 10: Tubthumping--chumbawumba I'm Too Sexy--Right Said Fred
Ugh... the memory of those just purged the rest from my brain.

Good selections of Big Band tunes there, Ed. However, I thought this thread was supposed to be about "One Hit Wonders"?! And thus, Sammy, Tommy and Spike all had quite a few hits back in the day, ya know.
And folks, I can't believe nobody as of yet has mentioned this one:
"Spirit In The Sky"-Norman Greenbaum

BILLY THORP !!! I had that album (loved the cover art) and played that one song, children of the sun, until the stylus rendered the record to shreds (figurativly speaking of course)
Of cours there is the mighty hit wonders no one has ever heard of , Kim Mitchell & Max Webster....

Good one's but the Zombie's had a few hits like "Time of the Season" and "She's not There". Check out their version of "Summertime" originally by Billie Holiday very good! but I regress.
How about "Too Shy" by Kajagoogoo!!

The sad thing about some of those "one hit wonder" bands (especially the ones from the 80's) is that they shouldn't have been "one hit wonders". Sometimes, the hit they had was not the best song on their album, it just happened to be the song that the record company determined that would be the single that would be released for radio play.

Some of the best artists never produced any "hits" on top 40 radio.
Many of those that produced the hits did their best work on early albums that never got any air play, the hits came later.
And Led Zep never released a single. The songs the radio played had to be taken from the album.

<And Led Zep never released a single. The songs the radio played had to be taken from the album.> Atlantic Records released around 11 Zep singles. I had a couple back then (and more now). Whole Lotta Love on a 7 incher had most of the Page bow/echoplex/screaming stuff edited out for AM radio play. FM radio was known for spinning album cuts. http://ledzeppelin.alexreisner.com/discography.html

Yeah, I misstated I meant that their biggest hit was never released as a single. Also (IMHO), their best songs were never hits.

If you're meaning 'Stairway...' you're right, it was never released as a single nor a lot of their other longer tracks. Probably promoted bigger LP sales. Page did a trick early in their career of deliberately listing an incorrect track length to 'How Many More Times' of 3:30, correct length was 8:28. Knowing radio stations wouldn't play an eight minute song, he wrote the track time shorter to get airplay. After Stairway, stations didn't have a problem with playing longer tracks. btw, the intro to that song is a direct lift from 'Taurus' by Spirit, whom they often went to see in concert according to the guitarist, Randy California. But, there were a lot of borrowed riffs by Zep. Not an uncommon thing for many bands.

Sure! Two great blues R&B singers. I used to play Grits Ain't Groceries by Little Milton in a band (mainly due to Wet Willie's version i admit).
