I have also found the false neutral position between gears a few times. I don't worry about it, just shift again and all is well. Ive never done it for kicks so I cant speak to the real question here.
I can say that it most often happens with a lighter weight oil and with certain oils. This is the main reason I run Amsoil vs. Mobile 1... but I have no scientific proof of my speculations here.
