It should be exactly the same in order for it to be grammatically correct. In this case the word is a modifier that stresses the identical comparison of one item with another. Alternately, one could say precisely the same in order to demonstrate the condition.
Note also that educated and smart aren't necessarily things that go hand-in-hand.
