Hmmmm...sorry Jim, but I have to admit I'd be a little leery of using any computer operating system named "Ubuntu".
(...I mean, call me overly suspicious here, but I think I'd stay away from any computer system that sounds like it's named after a Nigerian prince!!!!)

Consider it nuked. I was able to go in through the ISP's control panel, which is not blocked by my company firewall.

No warning here either just two trips to the doctor to get this computer running again. Webroot Antivirus is picking up cookies coming as fast as I can delete them this all started at same time. CMAXMal/FakeAV-A, MalFakeAV/Cn-A, Mal/lframe-V,Mal/TDSSConf-A Only the first one is known to have any details the others "could be an emerging threat not yet documented" also Rogue Security Products. Hope this helps.

The rogue security product you speak of is called "MS Removal Tool" and it is trying to get you to enter your credit card details. It IS the virus/malware all the other ones are fake. I got rid of it by going to www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-ms-removal-tool and printing out the instructions and then following them. It is now gone from my system and its free.

I had that a bit ago, it comes up with a warning, so you go "WTF?" and click on it. Thats when it downloads and takes over your PC. You follow its instructions cos you're in a panic and it will take you to place where there's a program to buy for about $80. It looks a bit like mico soft. What made me suspious was that it was in dollars and microsoft would have done it in pounds. It also wouldn't let me download any other security software.
What I ended up doing was logging off, then logging in again on my daughters user accounton my pc which I found to be unaffected. So I was able to download Security Essentials (free ) which then manged to clear it out altogether
It did come back under a different name, but I used my daughters account again to get rid.
It came back once more, again with a different name, but that time I just closed it on the first page, and when I ran Security Essentials it wasn't there
So I recommend having at least 2 acounts on your pc, and if you get the warning message, just close it then run whatever security program you use

Hopefully you can get the site repaired. I am able to get in and get to the forums. The Alureon attack seriously whacked my computer, which really ticks me off. It set a policy that disables task manager unless you know how to get around it. It disables the Admin account and sets the contents of all folders to be hidden. When I came back up after cleaning up in safe mode I was initially bummed to think it wiped out all my files; but I quickly figured they were there and hidden. Getting everything back to normal as it was before the attack has been a serious PIA I may still end up wiping and rebuilding to get it just the way I had it prior. In all honesty I feel that the world should treat those that create malware and viruses just like any other terrorist. It is exactly what they are terrorists and they need to be dealt with in the same manner. Figure out where they are and strike with a SEAL team and put one in their melon. After a few are dealt with like that fewer will continue to play the game.

I had that almost two weeks ago, the night I was preparing to leave the Thompson Falls metroplex for the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex.
Screen comes up with a false, faux, fake, contrived XP scan diagnostic page & recommends an $80 upgrade, courtesy of my VISA card number to preevnt future problems. I entered BR549, but it didn't take.
Talking to a local computer guy, he indicated it is a Russian based virus trolling for credit card numbers, which they use to purchase online airfare, then exchange for cash.
Returning home a visit to the local 'puter fix it shop including scans, defragging, vacuuming a 1/4 lb of dust and I'm back in bidness.
Funny thing though, clicking on ba.com I got a page recommending $100 cash sent to Dwight2

Thanks for the suggestions but in the end even my computer Dr could not get rid of an embedded problem so wipe it clean and start over. Google searches took me to a blank page and Skype would not open the Dr considered it it personnel affront that he could not get rid of the problem after consulting with a number of anti virus companies . I'll be loaded for bear when it comes back on line tomorrow. From my IPad.....

One way to avoid much of this stuff is to switch to Linux as an operating system. The only thing I use windows for is itunes and turbo tax. Both rarely. And the price is right!

Sorry, man. I hope it wasn't because of the homepage. I'm kinda rethinking my approach to it. I've done over a dozen other sites with WordPress and never had any problems like this.

This is exactly what happened to me. I have nothing on my computer and everything is black. I've figured out how to dissable my task manager and get to the internet but other than that, nothing shows but a black screen. I kinda figured everything might still be there, but hidden. I'm not sure how to go about maybe getting this cleaned up but YES, this has been a major PIA.

We should treat them the same way we'd treat people who would poison the water supply, blow up power plants or set fire to refineries. Enough of this kid gloves crap. Let the Saudis carry out their punishment as we are too big a weenies to do it right and broadcast it over the internet. Show their grieving mothers crying "But he's such a good boy."
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I think Friar is being diplomatic. I suspect that the two members who have had major virus corruption have probably picked up the bug from another site and the timing is coincidental. What have you lads been doing? If it WAS this site, then there would be many more who were infected with the same major data corruption. That's not to say that there wasn't a virus on the homepage - just probably not the same one that damaged these two computers. It is the individual's responsibility to have their own security software (or a Mac ). Viruses are rife - often hosted at innocent (naive) sites - and can be innocently passed on - usually by precisely those few who don't bother with security software. So let's not assume the worst and crucify Friar (yet). (joking)

Actually I had up to date software. I use Mc Affee and I have a couple of malware type programs, firewalls etc but this thing gets around them and switches them off. I don't know how it works but it is a smart one.
I don't think anyone is blaming FJ as it is hardly his fault. As soon as I informed him of my situation he nuked the homepage.
My problem is now resolved by the way. I fixed it myself and I am hardly an expert.

Yeah I know no ones blaming Friar but I wanted folks to know, and also the unfortunate guys who lost their hard drives, that their misfortune probably wasn't caused by this site. Our site's virus was only a cold - they caught the the black plague (relatively speaking).

The people who write these things are constantly updating them to get around security programs. The security writers are always playing catch up.

I don't feel like anyone is blaming me, but they may have a right to, I dunno.
The thing that I wonder about is that as I've said I've never had this kind of problem with WordPress or the plugins before, but I've used plugins on this site that I've never used before. I apply every security patch for WordPress as soon as it comes out and they're really good about squashing bugs and security holes. I did find some errant code, however, so we didn't imagine this, but it was very simplistic in nature, really more like phishing type stuff, not hardcore virus stuff.
I use Google Chrome as my primary browser with Microsoft Security Essentials for all my other security (virus, firewall, etc.) and I guarantee I hit the homepage more than any of you. I saw the warning a couple times and it never mentioned a specific virus. And I never got infected even though I always told it to ignore the warning and proceed to the site.
So I just don't know. But when I rebuild the site (a process that's already started) I will only install plugins that I trust (have been working on my other sites) and test others elsewhere first.

Friar - I didn't mean anyone was blaming you - and I don't think they are. The crucifixion was meant to be a joke. My point was simply that the couple of members who had a very bad experience must have got infected elsewhere - otherwise there would be many more on this forum reporting serious consequences. I should have just said that instead of trying to be funny.

I agree with Ian, and Foglefar here. Cyber space is full of predators, they probably got the virus from elsewhere. I never even got a virus warning. I personally think the virus protection software people are the ones who make the viruses (if thats a word). They then create fake porn sites to infect computater so people will buy their virus protection. (They know people aren't going to not surf porn). Its been the biggest use of the net from the very begining.

Many viruses/trojans/malware also get spread by email attachments and those affected can be unaware they are acting as hosts infecting others. They don't need to have visited dubious sites themselves.

Over the last ten days one of my work computers was infected with hostage ware. The local computer guru found several layers of crap on it. We could not get the Point Of Sale system and the Shipping Manifest System to work together after we disinfected it. I finally had to have corporate swap hard drives and re-image the computer. That machine was never used to visit this site. Here at home I have a Mac and have never had a problem. Death to Hackers!!!

They then create fake porn sites to infect computater so people will buy their virus protection. (They know people aren't going to not surf porn). Its been the biggest use of the net from the very begining.
Okay, okay! ALRIGHT already! I ADMIT IT! It was probably all MY fault!!!
(...but don't worry, I promise I'll NEVER visit that "Russian MILFs in stockings and high heels riding in Ural motorcycle sidecars" website again!!!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)
