Hi all,
I have a stock 2006 America (except for a K&N filter). I'm looking for suggestions on upgrading the exhaust. I'm interested in better performance, a deeper sound, and making the bike louder but not insanely loud. I also plan on replacing the snorkel with a Polaris bellmouth at the same time if that makes a difference to the type of exhaust I should consider.
The dealer wanted ~$900 all said and done, including rejetting the carbs. It seems pretty high to me, but these are custom pipes made for the dealership, not the normal Triumph "off-road use" pipes.
Thanks!

Where in PA are you? Did you try Hermy's? Last I asked him he was making pipes too, not completely open but less restrictive. The baffles he used are packable and removable.

I'm probably going to have a set of 2 year old Epco's available in a couple of weeks for roughly half of what they are new. If you have any interest you can search on them to see what they look like for now and there are even sound bites of em. Sound quite nice at idle with a bit of a bark when cranked.
$900 sounds like a lot of cabbage. Rejetting yourself is pretty straightforward, but not sure what a bellmouth runs. I'd think you could do nice preowned pipes, jets and the filter for something in the $250-$300 range.
All depends on what you want I reckon.

Epcos sound nice. Freedom had some on his last bike. Specialty Spares sound better. :P

Welcome to the site! Friar John suggested Specialty Spares which I too would recommend. It turns out that the guy who was making they stopped putting them out until... until some of us whined about not being able to get them any more and the dear fellow made up a special batch just to get us to shut up!! Well, I'm one of those who whined and I now have a set of those beautiful pipes. They sound good... increase performance AND (and this is a big AND) they look GREAT!!! You can choose your own tips from a few different types and really dress up your bike. So... talk to Eddy at www.fasteddysports.com and he'll set you up because Dale (the Specialty Spares godsend) made up a few extra sets and put Eddy in charge of getting them out there.

Wow, thanks for the quick responses!
@The_Dog33 - I am in Philadelphia so Hermy's is about an hour and a half away. I'll give him a call.
@blackdog - I'll check out the Epco's and let you know. Since the bike is a 2006, I would almost rather put used parts on it to save money. I did not consider rejetting myself, but now that you mention it I may be able to enlist the help of some of my car-mechanic friends.
Thanks @FriarJohn and @Keith for the info on Specialty Spares. I was under the impression that they are quiet loud though.
I also have a few more related questions: * What effect will a new exhaust and intake have on the engine life? I am at 14,000 miles now and have a goal of 50,000 on this bike. I'm currently averaging 4,000 a season. * Will a new exhaust help the bike start easier? Perhaps even without the choke?
Thanks!

New exhaust and/or modified intake will not affect engine life at all. Expect to get 100,000 miles out of it if you take good care such as frequent oil and filter changes.
What pipes you have would not change the way your bike starts. Why do you ask... is your bike hard starting now? Using the choke is normal.

If my bike sits overnight under 40-45 degrees, it is hard to start with the choke, but if it sits in an attached garage, it will start no problem when it is 35 degrees outside.

Bargain?
I'm thinking about picking these up. If these are Epco's, where do you guys think they rank on this list of pipes from quietest to loudest from the Exhaust Loudness Ranking thread:
Stock (sewing machine) TORS (long) TORS (short) Stock (debaffle) D&D BUB SS Sceptre (baffle) Sceptre (no baffle)
Many people in that thread are talking about riding with ear plugs, which doesn't interest me at all.
Where would Epco's rank both with and without the baffles? Does adding or removing the baffles require a rejet?
Also, will I need to pick up anything else to bolt these on? Or can I reuse parts from my stock pipes?
Thanks!

I've had stock, TORs, Epcos, and SS. I know very well what Sceptre sounds like as I hear them on a regular basis. I've heard all the pipes listed above. That being said, I believe EPCOs name should sit right between the D&D and BUBs. I liked mine. If you can get a set at a good price, I would get them. They sound great when you get on them and they are neighborhood safe. You can use the hangers from your stock pipes if hangers don't come with your next set. I'm not sure what you're set-up is so I can't speak to re-jetting however I will say re-jetting is a good idea anytime you switch something like pipes or mess with the bikes breathing.

I would have to agree. I spend a lot of time riding with Freedom with his old bike that had Epcos. Definitely quieter than Specialty Spares. I think they're on par with AmyLee's short BUB slashcuts and Moe's D&Ds.

I have the Epcos and like them a lot. They sound good when you open them up, but if you stay off the throttle in the 'hood they are fine. The performance is better too.

Thanks for the input. I want something that isn't too loud at idle, but has some sound when your on the throttle. I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks!

My vote is obviously for the Bubs. They sound great at all times, especially when you twist the throttle. Several years ago, someone posted something about how the Bubs were set-up/tuned for our bikes. I also wear ear plugs, not because of the Bubs, but to just protect what hearing I have left from the air flow noise.
Blue/White 2007 TBA, Thruxton needles, Unifilter, AI removed, Polaris Bellmouth, Bubs, Nology Coils/wires, Lightbar, Ricor Intiminators, Hagon Nitros, Tall Sissy Bar w/luggage rack, Dart flyscreen & Lowers. 130 Mains, TrueGel Battery MG12-BS.

I picked up the Epco's on eBay for about $140. Sounds reasonable for me. Hopefully, I get them soon. This is a dumb question but how do you pronounce them: ep-co? My 2006 America is 790cc. With the Epco's, K&N filter, and Polaris Bellmouth, how should I rejet? Looking at the Jetting Calculator, I suppose I should go with Pilots/Main of either either 42/131.5 or 45/130.5. I selected "Uni Single" since I didn't see a K&N option, and I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I don't know the "K&N Pods" option is, but I don't believe I have that. Thanks.

Good deal. Pretty sure you'll like the Epcos. And you got 'em for less than I'd a sold 'em to ya! And 'Ep-co' is right.

The jetting calculator seems to be pretty spot-on based on my experiences (two rejets). You either have the stock, OEM paper filter, or a reusable filter (K&N, etc.) Pods has the airbox removed and cone filters installed, the least restrictive option. Quote:

I just got the Epco's in the mail today! Can anyone recommend a vendor to buy a jet kit from? Or even a specific jet kit if I am going with Pilots/Main of either either 42/131.5 or 45/130? All the kits I've come across seem to come with way too much. Thanks!

Thanks Keith.
I order 45 pilots and 130 and 132 mains to allow for some experimentation between the stock 42 pilots and the 45s.
I've read that I should stick with the 42 pilots. Does anyone have any thoughts? I know the mains don't kick in until the throttle is pretty open so it seems like you could almost not even rejet if you don't open the throttle all the way. I am also removing the snokerl and adding a bellmouth though.

UPDATE: I had the epcos and bellmouth installed, and the carbs rejetted (45/132, didn't touch the pilot screws or needles). The bike is running great with a noticeable power increase off the line and if I open it up in low gears.
I'm sure the epcos have some miles on them since they are pretty yellow. I'm going to try to clean them up with barkeepers friend and maybe even repack them if that is worth doing for pipes with a lot of miles.

You probably still need to adjust those mixture screws.

Do you know where I can find more information on this? I didn't see anything in Pat's jetting calculator. The bike idles nicely and doesn't hesitate off the line. I don't quite understand what the pilot screw does vs. the pilot jet.
Thanks!

with the bike at idle turn the screw in until that cyl. runs rough, then back out until it runs rough counting the turns. The right setting is 1/2 way between the 2 rough spots. I disconnect one plug at a time to do this so it is easier to hear when that side gets rough. You will need to turn the idle up slightly so it stays running on 1 cyl. Ground the plug wire you disconnected if you use that method. This chart shows when the different circuits come into play.

Looks like jetting and pipes are pretty well covered. I would say not to waste your money on that bellmouth. Just take the snorkels that are there and throw them away, drop a K&N in and move along.
I have seen absolutely no dyno evidence that our bikes go faster with a Bellmouth snorkel.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

I already had the bellmouth so I used it, but, yes, everything I have read has indicated that, in practice, it is not noticeable.

I did another 50 miles today with the epco pipes, and even with ear plugs in, they are pretty loud. I assume repacking them will quiet them down a bit? Can anyone recommend repacking material and/or a place to purchase it?
Thanks!

Thanks for the offer StainlessRide.
I should have followed up and said that we did repack the pipes, and I am very happy with the sound. I've put well over a 1,000 miles on the pipes, mostly on the highway, and they are working out great.
