So Jason's thread about Ice Mocka Latte sparked some discussion on coffee and I though hey, coffee is an interesting enough topic to have it's own thread so here ya go.

Now, I recently posted how I make the undisputed best-coffee-this-side-of-the-Canadian Rockies coffee. How I do this is simple enough. I start with a freshly medium dark roasted batch of Arabica beans, or sometimes I go for a blend of dark roast (espresso) and medium roast beans. Either way it's usually on the dark side of medium. Then I grind just the amount I'll use for the coffee I'm making. Following that I put three slightly heaped single tablespoon scoops into a two cup french press, add piping hot water and wait five minutes. This is how I make my famous brew, and this is how I wake up each and every morning.

Here's a few interesting coffee facts.
  • Coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world next to oil
  • Drinking a single cup of coffee that has been brewing for 20 minutes provides the body with 300 phytochemicals which act as antioxidants and stay in the body for up to a month.
  • It takes 40 coffee beans to make an espresso.
  • One coffee tree yields less than half a kilo of coffee per year.

So how do you do your coffee (If you do coffee at all)? Do you make it at home, go out for a cup, grab one at a drive through on the way to work? Are you a coffee snob? Drink anything with the name coffee on it? Do you drink it in the morning, all day, weekends only? How do you contribute to the world's second most traded commodity?

Live to love, love to live.

Hi, My name is Ed and I'm a coffee addict. I roast my own beans and usually have upwards of 200 lbs of green beans in my basement. I own five coffee grinders but only regularly use 3. My day begins with a double espresso consumed while preparing to fill my thermos with a fresh brew made in my vacuum pot I'm presently enjoying an Ethiopian Sidamo But my favorite origin is a nice natural prep Brazilian bean mixed with a traditional mocca/java blend.

My daily coffee ritual is almost identical to yours Keith. The grind (conical burr grinder), the plunger and the thermos - enjoyed black. The only differences are I make twice the volume/strength and I like freshly roasted Nicaraguan Maragogipe beans which are 3 times the size of regular beans, dark rich with chocolate overtones.

I rarely like buying a cup of coffee at coffee shops because they usually have no idea how to make a black coffee. They burn the grounds and the taste of cheap or just average beans they use always comes through with a black coffee - (the flavour, bitterness or burntness is usually masked by milk and other additives so most people don't notice).

Cheers, Richard

I obtain green coffee beans from and internet supplier (actually Mrs. T does the ordering) and once a week or so I roast using our Gene Cafe coffee roaster. The machine is somewhat programmable but I find that paying attention to the process allows for the best success. I roast the beans until they start sweating oil, allow that caramelize a bit and then start the cooling cycle. The beans are good for about a week or so, then they begin to resemble coffee shop fare as they go stale...

No additives, just good strong black coffee.

Hi - I'm Bob and I'm a coffee snob (and proud of it) I drive an hour north to buy coffee at a local roaster. I have a conical burr grinder and grind just before brewing. I usually use a stove top percolator for quanity, a french press for the two cup dinner brew, and a single cup brewer during the day. This mornings brew was a mix of hazelnut and sin, comes out with a nice dark coloring and heavenly scent! The local coffee stops really are disappointing and even Dunkin Donuts hasn't been great lately. Nothing tops a home brewed cup of java!

HOLY COWABUNGA BEAN!

AN I THOUGHT I WAS A COFFEE SNOB! YOU GUYS GOT ME BEAT BY MILES!

I am one of the guys that does not wake up in time , or should I say any earlier than I have to b4 work. So the coffee in the morning is usually a sh^ty machine at work or a gas station. I know its crap coffee. Probably why I have switched to MONSTERS' KONA BLEND energy drink on the way into work.

We have a good shop that gets free trade beans from a supplier who does fair buisness with the farmers. I like a bean caled CUMBRE' and a darker side of medium also. I can call ahead and they will roast a bag fresh for me. I will keep the beans in the freezer, and yes I do use a auto drip. I perfer to use a espresso / cappichineo maker, but that got broke and I have not replaced it yet. We also have a french press, I reserve that for camping when I do not feel like making "COWBOY COFFEE" (aka camp fire perkulator, but I cheat and use the colman stove)

The Jitter Bean company is good and even my wife now complains about sub-standard coffee.

HATS OFF TO THE TRUE COFFEE SNOBS

Im not a coffee snob but I do enjoy mine. I have to say id love to have the opportunity to give a taste to some of that home roasted black gold you are all speaking of.

My ritual is to wake up, get one of many collectible Starbucks mugs (I try and not pick the LA cup), add one packet of Splenda, add coffee creamer, insert K cup into my magical Keurig and press the big cup button. After some noise and a quick spin of a spoon I start drinking.

I must say, as I sit here this morning reading this thread, sipping my cup of coffee it doesn't taste quite as good as it usually does

That wouldnt happen to be Mad River Coffee House would it? That was where I was first exposed to roasting. I picked up lb of coffee there and took it camping. The smell was so incredible that I bought a roaster the same week and jumped in head first.

It wasn't until this thread that I even thought of doing my own roasting... I bet THAT makes a difference (as I sit here enjoying my best-coffee-this-side-of well, you know what I mean). Sip, sip... ahhh, this IS good coffee but if home roasted equates to an even BETTER cut, I gotta look into THAT!!

So Ed... you use the Gene Cafe coffee roaster. How's that working for ya?

As I sit here sipping "Folgers" out of my John Wayne "Don't say it's a good morning or I'll SHOOT YA." coffee cup, I'm reminded of the best coffee ever is 1st cup in the morning camp coffee. I don't care what brand it is, if it's processed in a French Press, or just boiled with an egg shell, hardly anything can beat Camp Coffee. IMHO

I'm speeding because I have to get there before I forget where I was going.

Well, I'm another who prefers fresh ground, fresh brewed coffee. I've heard about home roasting but never seriously considered it. Until now Think I'll look into it.

HEY! Maybe one of youse guys that does that could start a new thread where we could get some pertinent info.

Anyway, my morning mud is always freshly ground (keep my beans in the freezer) with an afore mentioned burr grinder, a Waring that I've had for twenty some years.
I brew with a 10 cup Bunn drip machine that keeps the water at just the right temperature into a thermal carafe. No "burner plate" to ruin the flavor.

I have an eight cup french press that I use for camping and also when I have a special ($$$$) coffee that I want to extract all of the flavor and subtleties from.

And an espresso machine for a change up.

I try to use free trade coffee and have found Colombian and Guatemalan beans to be the most to my liking for reasonable price.

Of course, I haven't tried them all.

Even most (not "the " most ) expensive coffees are still a relatively cheap treat.

No sweetner, no lightener, no fru-fru flavors. Just coffee.

Might as well start here: Sweet Maria's
I began with a Whirly Pop, a thermometer, and an attic fan; about 20 minutes of stirring constantly until that second crack sounded and the temp was a steady 450°. Don't be fooled by indoor hoods and the like as roasting produces a prodigious amount of smoke when it's done correctly.

Automation beckoned and I started using this:

The iRoast has multiple programmable roasting curves to let you experiment a lot.

I found I really just stick to the basics so I moved on to my current machine Gene Roaster and a couple of hours of coffee zen/roasting each week. Works for me.

I usually go to a local drive through called Coffee Rush and get their Coffee Rush drink. It's a 20oz coffee with three shots of espresso.

I quit coffee cold turkey last July after I realized I had a problem, namely 10 cups a day. I love the stuff. I just don't seem able to love it in moderation. So, now I drink tea.

In a couple of Spanish Cafés in Miami, I have taught them to make my coffee.
It's a Double Espresso, two brown sugars, and about 6 ice cubes.
It cools it down enough that it's still hot, but you can slam it down.
It's called a 'Cafe Gringo'.

I didn't know we were regarded as snobs, but I fall a little short of Ed since I don't roast any beans. I DO grind the beans right before brewing them in my Technivorm.

Y'all do know that the price of coffee jumped 11% this past week?

I love coffee! But I take mine iced. Got hooked on iced coffee years ago when I worked in a hot factory while going to college. Now I can't drink the hot stuff, anything more than a shot of expresso goes right through me in a bad way! I make mine in a drip pot the night before and stick it in the frig overnight. Also make coffee ice cubes. I use 8'oclock coffee columbian roast. I take it black.

I'm the opposite.

I tried iced coffee over here and just couldn't!
They use cream and some kind of sweet syrup to make iced coffee... infect!

Actually, even hot coffee is bad... Taiwan never learned how to brew a nice cup of coffee.

So, I do my own mix with medium roast columbia and dark roast espresso. Grind it as perfectly as I can, use an espresso machine to press a double, froth the milk and voila! Got my latte every morning.

I NEED it! There are very few places that can come up with a better coffee than mine. So, I like to introduce my local friends to what a coffee should really taste!

This is a bad thread for me... it s now the evening and you guys got me into thinking about coffee!

I used to, but now, I can't drink this after 3h pm... or I'll lay on my bed wide-opened-eyes until 4h am!

I likes me some good strong fresh coffee. Although most don't, a select few K cup brands meet that expectation. Emeril's is one, although the dam-ed K cups are very expensive, say $0.60 per cup. I would prefer grind & brew, but don't have the ambition to go there manually, and don't have a spare $300 for a proper grind and brew all in one auto with timer unit.

Maybe it's just me, but when I have to settle for weak-a$$ gas station coffee, I have to wonder if anybody actually enjoys it that weak? I guess so. Brown water. Yuck.

local roaster(actually his family has been in s america for over 100yrs growing beans) , starbucks grinder, 1cup dripper and i like it right out of the pot...no additives!! i do prefer perculated but dont have time these days to wait for that. if i cant get to my roaster, i will grab a bag of 8:00 cuz when i was a child my father worked at A&P and thats the coffee i was wiened on. never been much of one for any of that fancy foofoo coffee, my dad used to say if you are gonna add cream and sugar, why not just have hot chocalate hahahahahaha which is what i think most people that drink that stuff are after cuz they really dont like coffee and just drink it cuz they are "grown ups" now and are to big for hot choc so they put all these additives in there to mask the coffee hahahahahaha since the creation of drip makers, coffee is just coffee to me. I have always been told not to keep coffee in the fridge or freezer as it will go bad faster than if just left out. the 2 enemies of coffee bean are moister and smells, if you keep your coffee in an airtight container so it wont pick up any smells in the fridge or freezer thats a start but when you take it out a little condensation will form and that aint good.

I would love a Technivorm. I'm sure they're worth every penny but until recently I didnt drink brewed coffee that often and relied mainly on my espresso machine. Now you got me thinking...

A good green bean resource for those who roast is greencoffeebuyingclub.com. If you buy 15lbs at a time it works out to be a pretty good savings and there are a very knowledgable group of people over there.

I drink a lot of coffee. The morning use to start with a pot of Chase and Sanborn, then a pot of Maxwell House at work.
Being single, I now have 3-4 at Dennys in the morning and none at work. Denny's coffee is not bad. Try to hit Waffel House in DeBary, Fla at night. Really good coffee.
I have learned that water is what makes coffee good or bad. I drink my coffee like my ladies, Hot and Straight!!

It's a tad more than just water, although that's part of it for sure. It turns out coffee goes rancid very quickly and most commercial brands (Maxwell House, Folgers, Nabob) are rancid right out of the can. It's at the point now where I can't bear to smell such coffee let alone drink it... but then again, I'm a coffee snob.

Read about the origins of the endearing plant we know botanically as Coffee arabica ( not Coffee robusta ) .

It all began in Ethiopia with the Kaffa tribe , hence the name "coffee" .

And it all started with dancing goats .

Good coffee make me dance like a goat and fly like a G6 and bust bubble wrap .

Try to hit Waffel House in DeBary, Fla at night. Really good coffee.

Waffle House has the best coffee ever!!!!! I used to live off of that stuff! I say it could compete with Dunkin' Donuts coffee.

Ya know if you can buy the beans through the local store?

That's interesting, Wade. I found the dancing goats story which goes as follows...

"Coffee was first discovered in what is now called Ethiopia. According to legend, the area's remote highlands were home to a goatherd named Kaldi. One day he noticed his goats dancing and prancing after eating the small, red fruit of a nearby shrub. Not wishing to be left out of the fun, Kaldi ate the coffee cherries and soon he was dancing with his goats!"

05Woody nailed it. Imho, nothing beats the first cup of camp coffee. However, after seeing the discussion of gourmet coffee and roasting techniques I am willing to admit that I may need to expand my horizons. I heard about this special roast at some time in the past. Not sure if I am willing to shell out the money for this particular delicacy, but I would try it if I had a chance. Kopi Luwak Coffee

What a great forum, Steven! Makes me realize how very little I know about coffee. I'm gonna learn a lot from that site. Appreciate the link!!!

I think you will learn to appreciate coffee by taking what's said there with a grain of salt. Just remember that there are fanatics in any hobby, so some of the things being written at Coffee Geek might, deservedly, be thought of as far fetched.

I do agree with the unanimous opinion there that you can't get a good cup of coffee at Starbucks.

Me too. There are rumours it's laced with MSG although I've had trouble substantiating that. There is however SOMETHING about their coffee that just isn't right.
