Next problem. Rode about 2 miles to wash my bike. It's back firing occasionally. Get done, got the highway. More backfires. Then BAM! Dead. None of the same problems as before. Still have power to everything. Turns over, doesn't start.
Ideas?
Pro-com is set to 5.
Still pushing it home as I type this on my phone.

No doubt. I can't imagine that setting the procom on 5 would do that even though they suggest 4. Maybe I'll put the stock CDI back on and see if it works. If it does I'll bathe it in silicone or epoxy resin to try and waterproof it, but if I hit serious rain again I'll just have to plan on stopping. If I'm not feeling so drained tomorrow I'll do that and pull my jets and bowls and douche everything out just in case. I've been running seafoam in it as a winterizing thing so I don't think the carbs are the problem. The procom is the only thing that's changed (functionally) since Washington last September. If I'm driving I don't know what route to take. I don't fancy following a bunch of bikes in my car and only driving 400 miles a day. I might meet you in Boise then blaze for Prescott straight through the next day. I'm sure the Sierra Inn will have rooms a couple days early.

I would already have the stock ignitor back in. The thing that confuses me with the # setting on those, how could it possibly make a difference if it's still set for a 270ยบ motor? If my ignitor went out, I would just replace it with any that works, not one that matched the number on it. If 4 and 5 both work for our engines, it really shouldn't matter. Once disconnected, the wiring harness can't possibly know the difference. It sucks taking it all apart to put the stock unit back in, but really should only take about a half hour. I know, I just did it since the Procom unit I got a week ago didn't work and I had to take it back out so I could send it in. My replacement is in the box here, just waiting...

I'll put the stocker back in tomorrow. If it works I'll spray the hell out of it with some kind of sealant and hope for the best.
I don't think I mentioned, but it backfired so hard through the right carb it blew off the air filter (safety wired, of course).

I know its a long shot but if it happens to be your coil(s) I have a spare set of OEM I can bring along.
Heck if Karens igniter would work Id bring that but hers is an 865 igniter.

Well, this sure sucks!
After that hellacious backfire you described John, did you check to see if you still have compression on both cylinders? I ask only because it sounds as if your spark was somehow so far advanced that I'm hoping you didn't hole a piston.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that that's not the case, and that it's just a faulty Pro-Com unit, and that your old unit will end up being the fix.

I hope that the PROCOM's are a little more reliable than that! I have a brand new one sitting in my spare room that I have not installed yet. I was planning on installing it after I got it back from getting new clutch plates installed. Good luck John and keep us posted to let us know what you find out.

Is there a way to check for compression without a gauge?

You won't be able to get an actual reading of the compression with the following method of course, but you could use the old roadside method of removing the spark plugs and holding your thumb loosely over each hole while you spin the starter motor.
If you've holed a piston you'll get no suction/air-push on your thumb.
I doubt you have holed either of them, but I'd definitely rule this out by doing this anyway.

Could I have damaged the electrodes on the spark plugs? If I'm going to pull the tank anyway I might check on those, and of course, do the thumb-based compression test.

I haven't changed a thing except the CDI, fuel filter and the petcock. Haven't touched the carbs. Oh, I cleaned the air filters. New battery. All the fuses are good.
Dwight is talking about a possible hole in the piston. This seems highly unlikely, of course.

John. Did this happen after you washed the bike. Just asking cause I used to have a old yamma XT500, and if the coils got soaked bad (usually after washing) it would backfire like hell (or not start) till they got dried out.

My speedy did a similar thing and sounded like the Blitz before it died. Fried the harness and half the plug going into the cdi!

Again, how can this possibly make a difference? 270ยบ is 270ยบ right? Is it because of the cams that the timing is different? I'm sure this has been covered somewhere along the way, but I can't seem to remember it at the moment.

Yeah, on second thought here John, usually "hole-ing" a piston involves pre-ignition AND high operational heat. And so, because it sounds like you had sprayed water all over your bike and it wasn't overly hot when this happened, I'm now thinkin' it's just a case that you soaked your coil or some other part of your wiring harness while you were washing it and you had a short. In fact, I'll bet there's a good chance your bike will fire up this morning, once it's dried off.

Bike didn't fire. Ran the battery down trying. It's sort of charging right now (hooked up to the jump pack).
Plugs are fine. Not fowled. Compression appears to be very strong, based on the thumb test. Stock CDI doesn't make it go. All the fuses are good.
Not sure what to check next. Could be the coils. Have no way to test. Doubt both coils would fail at the same time and there's not so much as a gurgle when turning over. It's not even trying to start. The sparkplug wires are virtually new.

Oh, on a separate note, there was some gas weeping around the Pingle. I hope it's the hose connection. It might be around the threads. It doesn't appear to be the mounting block.
There's plenty of gas in the fuel filter so it's not choked off.

So did you bypass the side stand switch to rule out water invasion?

How about spark...do you get spark?
Check the connections at the coils as well. Both for the plug wires and power/ground... look inside the plug wire and see if there may be a problem there.

Yeah, I believe that the issue here would be cam timing and ignition profiles.

What about bad gas? I know you rode it before this happened. Did you gas up the day before this happened?
If the explosion knocked a carb filter off I wonder if it could have damaged any of the internal rubbers like the diaphram at the carb top. Easy enough to check.

The gas in the tank is fresh. Anything in the carbs, which were run dry last Fall, should have already burned through.

Squirrel condoms are new.
When my side stand switch got corroded and killed the bike two years ago it didn't have these symptoms. And, as far as I know it should still start when not in gear.
Home now, going out to check for spark. If that's present then I guess I'll pull the carbs and start going through those. That will probably be tomorrow, though.

STRONG!
Stuck an old spark plug in the left side and grounded it. Spark.
Stuck that plug into the right side and grounded it. Not only did it spark, the engine was trying to start on one cylinder.
Put the right side plug wire back and it fired right up.
Runs STRONG. Didn't even need the choke to stay running (although the choke was on when it started).
Stock CDI.
Tomorrow I put the tank on and see if I can run it. If I get no problems, I yank it all apart to try and re-waterproof the stock CDI and button it all up.
Any suggestions on what I should coat the CDI with to waterproof it? Silicone? Leak-Ender 3000?
Boys and girls, there's still a chance.
I'll probably put the orange tank back on just because I know that petcock doesn't leak. I won't have the new tank on or the new pipes, but if it runs, it runs.

Congratulations, John! Maybe the crossed fingers some of us had for you made a difference! It's starting to look like Procom puts out the odd faulty CDI unit. But wait... why did your bike crap out last fall if not for the CDI? Hmmmm... ! Meanwhile I'll still keep my fingers crossed for ya, bud! Good luck out there!!!

I got a Procom unit just over a week ago, and the bike would not run right on any map, the tach quit working, and it would not idle at all. Sent it back and have a new one now, just haven't installed it yet. Yeah, there is an occasional faulty unit.

If it would help I can send you the manual in PDF form...
Dielectric grease is the weather sealer you want. A nice bead around the collar on the ignitor as well as the pins and you should be good to go. I'd also look at the neutral indicator and make sure it hasn't gotten all wobbly since it's all alone under the transmission.

I've got both manuals, thanks.
And I've always run dialectic grease in all my connectors.
I need to know what to use on the OUTSIDE of the CDI to seal it back up. I know Chy did it before but I can't find the conversation we had last Fall.

On the outside? Why not one of the many RTVs; easy to peel away if you need to and hi-temp to boot.

Be careful. RTV silicone releases acetic acid while curing. Not good for electrical connectors.

I don't remember who came up with the idea originally but it seems to work.. I wiped the module clean with a rag and used black 3m silicone to seal the gap between the cdi and the mounting bracket. I did my bike and Blue (you should be good to go PES) and also did Steve Sixmils at the rally this year when he had similar issues on the Cherohala Skyway.

That's great, thanks.
However, this morning I no longer have spark with either CDI. So that means coils or worse.
I'm driving.
See you Friday.

That sucks man. Stock coils?
Always remember to be yourself. Unless you suck. Then pretend to be someone else.

Yep. Can't replace them (unless I go raid Freedom's speedmaster) in time. And I'm not sure that's the problem. But there's not a lot left, unless the procom fried wiring. It ran last night, though. I'm just disgusted with the whole thing.
I have a solution, but it won't be here until June 10th.

If I'm bringing 4 wheels I'm bringing heat, AC and a radio.

John (Friar, not Freedom)... I just went to gas up for tomorrow morning and my bike didn't want to start. I was fiddling with it earlier, greasing up my coils, igniter, plugs and kick stand switch connection so if I hit rain Id be ok... Turns out one of my coils was loose.
Just thought Id throw that out there in case you want to make one last effort... plug connection continuity through plug wire coil connection coil power and ground wires
thats what I checked and she fired up.
