I know it will never change the way I feel about my TBA, but can anyone please tell me the facts are on what Triumph twin models were built/assembled in the Hinckley and Thailand plants and over what years? Posts over the last couple of weeks have left me somewhat confused. Or maybe that's beginning to be normal for me. Confused that is.

Thunderbirds, for sure, but you'd have to check the VINs of the other twins.

Quote:

the 11th VIN position is used to designate the Assembly Plant. J = Jacknell Road, Hinkley, England. T = Chonburi, Thailand.

This is what the fields mean:
POS 1 - 3 Manufacturer
POS 4 - 6 Model
POS 7 - Engine
POS 8 - Power Output
POS 9 - Check Digit
POS 10 - Model Year
POS 11 - Assembly Plant
POS 12 - 17 - Sequence Production Number

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

All Thunderbirds I have found are made in England.

Cheers Ed, I'm a really happy chappy now. Looks like my '06 TBA is a genuine Made in England model.

Here's the deal.... whether or not a Triumph motorcycle was assembled in England or Thailand does not matter. They are all Hinckley designed and engineered and the quality control is exactly the same as well. It's not like bikes assembled in Thailand are Chinesse knock-offs of the original. They are hard working people that take pride in what they do.

Thanks for saying this, although it's also fair to say that the Chinese-assembled Piaggio scooters use parts manufactured in Italy.

I just don't want any Chinese crawfish, drywall or baby toys in the house.

Nope, sorry Joe.

The 11th generation T-Birds (2002-2005) were STILL made in Michigan...though in Wixom, not Dearborn.

Whether English or Siamese Twins, it wouldn't make any difference to me. My 05 America was assembled and made in England but it wouldn't have bothered me if it had been assembled in Thailand. You buy a bike for the design, quality of construction, maybe looks, etc. Triumph's quality control will stay the same.

You are correct Soren. It is the same bike.

If all you want is a bike. Other than that it really isn't explainable. You either get it or you don't in either direction.

I understand John's concerns very well. Heritage is more than a tank badge to me. I do not believe anybody who buys a Thailand bike has bought a 2nd rate machine though.

Okay! I think I can go with THAT then, Joe!

But NOW the question is: What Thunderbirds are more pleasing to the eye? Those WITH fins(tail fins or otherwise), or those withOUT fins???????

(...hey, it's been a loooooong time since I've kidded about that ol' "fin issue", ya know folks!!!!)

True , but Ford had to get Triumph's permission.

And in the sixties Vespa had a plant in England.

According to a Triumph tech on another forum Chrome improved when Triumph moved it all to Thailand and in 07 when all the Bonnie variants began assembly in Thailand customer complaints went way down.

That's why the Trophy cost more than the 3 cylinder Thunderbird.

Yeah Mac, I've heard that too! Yep, word is because of environmental restraints in jolly ol' Blighty, the chromium manufacturing processes there are inferior to those in less regulated Thailand.

BUT(and you HAD to know THIS was comin'), once again "word is" the last batch of little Thai babies that were born around all the Chromium factories there were born with little flippers instead of little hands and feet!!!!

(...btw, if you're wonderin', no, I haven't started drinking this morning yet...all this kinda weird-a$$ stuff just kinda flows naturally out of this noggin of mine!!!!)

BTW Ron...it looks like it might be lucky for you afterall that you're gonna miss this year's SWTF.

Ya see, I had it ALL lined up for everybody to chow down Friday night at Prescott's newest and most talked about eatery...."The Bamboo Palace"!!!

And guess what kinda food they serve there, ol' buddy?

So in about 15 years we can expect an awesome Thai Olympic swim team.

(I make it a rule never to drink before 5 PM except for football season, college basketball season, NASCAR season,or the bars are open.)

Thailand is not some backwards third world dump. Its a quite modern place with a very English influence.

My favorite was always the '61-'63 models. Those babies just screamed "The Jet Age has arrived". And, the interiors were really cool on those especially.

However, you might have missed my little "joke" there. The reason I brought this whole "fin" thing up was 'cause I used to quite often around here take issue with what I thought was the somewhat bland design aesthetics of the new Triumph Thunderbird's cylinder barrels, and that they were/are a little too slab-sided, and that they could've used a little more fins around 'em to break that up a bit, and also give it more of an "Old School" air-cooled look, which if Bloor's Boys' stated mission for this bike was to attempt to steal some sales away from H-D, they should have made it as "Old School" looking as possible in order to entice just those kinds of potential customers over to Triumph, and of which I thought those fins might've helped in this regard, also.

(...but, as I said, this is an old issue and one of which most folks who were around here at BA.com when the new T-Birds hit the market were probably thinkin' has been put to rest by now)

Move up a few postings and you'll see why, Chad.

(...I'll give a hint...it all had somethin' to do with the element: Cr...AND my seemingly ever-present need to reach for and interject the absurd and the irreverent in threads which I find to be a little irrelevant to begin with...in other words, In this day and age, WHY the heck does it REALLY matter WHERE the heck these all-around great motorcycles are assembled????...WHICH, I believe IS kind of YOUR point, isn't it?!)

Yep, my favorites also. Still, I do think it was a shame to turn a sports car into a big cruiser, even if it was a reply to the vette. A friend of mines dad stored a 64 in his old garage, untouched, for more than 20 years. Just sat there, getting old and solid. Wasn't interested in fixing it up, wouldn't sell it. (That always bugs me) He died last year and they finally sold it to someone. I wonder if that person was gonna bring it back to life.

Thunderbirds, for sure, but you'd have to check the VINs of the other twins.

the 11th VIN position is used to designate the Assembly Plant. J = Jacknell Road, Hinkley, England. T = Chonburi, Thailand.

This is what the fields mean:
POS 1 - 3 Manufacturer
POS 4 - 6 Model
POS 7 - Engine
POS 8 - Power Output
POS 9 - Check Digit
POS 10 - Model Year
POS 11 - Assembly Plant
POS 12 - 17 - Sequence Production Number

does this work for all vin numbers , the reason i ask is my 09 model america has an "A" in the 11th position ???
thanks
