So much for "assuming", I learned this past week whilst purchasing a policy that Montana doesn't require motorbike owners to carry insurance.. http://www.themotorcyclelawyer.com/MontanaMotorcycleLaws.htmlHelmets optional, until 10-12 years ago the speed limit was defined as "reasonable & prudent". Fortunately, I have always been very reasonable & prudent jh

Washington State does not require MC insurance either, but Oregon does, don't ask me how I know.

In Texas insurance is required. The way people drive around here you would be stupid to not have insurance that covers yourself. I got liability, but have uninsured and underinsured driver, as well as medical for driver and passenger, on all my vehicles.

Don't scrimp on the UM (uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage). Buy all you can get. In the event you are in a motorcycle accident, the odds are it will be the other guys fault and they may only have minimal or no insurance. You might be hurt really bad, have loss of income, etc. I pay even more to stack my bike and car UM coverags which gives you double coverage for both vehicles. To stack coverages, you have to carry the same limits on each stacked policy.

Louisiana is said to have the highest auto insurance rates in the country. I pay $542 for FULL COVERAGE on TWO motorcycles. That figures out to $22.58 per month per motorcycle; a far cry from Keith's $112.

With just my 02 America it cost about $180.00 per year. When I got the Tiger in 08 AllState, GEICO and Progressive all quoted me over $1000.00 per year for both bikes. I ended up getting insurance through an independent insurance broker with GMAC insurance for about $250.00 a year both bikes.
Also Florida requires insurance. Without it you cannot register your vehicle. However, what a lot of people do is get the cheapest insurance they can, make one payment, register the vehicle, and then drop the insurance.

Florida requires insurance if they bike is not paid for? I'm pretty sure the BANK requires it. Not sure why the state would care.
Barebones GEICO Cycleguard for one motorcycle was about $120 a year. A couple years ago I bumped it up quite a bit and it was 160/year. I think with a second bike it's up another $80 per year.

In Oregon, if you get pulled over (bike or car) and you don't have proof of insurance (along with your registration), they will impound your vehicle. Same goes for if you don't have your endorsement.

Here in Texas they can check if you got insurance by running your plates. I was pulled over two weeks ago and the cop didn't ask to see my proof, he said I see you got progressive. I said as long as they got Flo in the commercials. He just looked at me a little off, and continued his rant. You know the whole you can't do this and that speech. He only gave me a warning. Any way get and keep your insurance.

Keith,
I went to TD online and am paying $672 a year for full coverage including collision (full replacement). Other than the deductable it wasn't too bad. If the collision and replacement value were removed, it was just over $500 a year.
I was paying $690 for basic coverage with my former insurer.

Without reading the entire statute, it appears FL allows vertical motorcycle license plates if one has a toll transponder. Interesting way to do it. Sure beats a flat out "no" and wasting LEO's time chasing vertical plates while 7 tons of meth roles by in a U haul.

There are debates about the wisdom of riding with out a helmet, or armored jackets. There is no debate about if you should ride a motorcycle on any public road without insurance. If you crash with or with out a helmet chances are you are hurt, and your bike along with someone else's property is damaged. Proper insurance will cover most of the cost depending on you deductible and your coverage.

I think the commercials are cute too, but might I recommend looking up who the CEO of Progressive is, and what organizations get all their (your) money?

Soooooo, then there might be a REASON the company I see Flo always pushin' at me on my TV is named "Progressive Insurance" and not "Conservative Insurance" then, eh?! Well then, NOW I'm wonderin' if it WAS named "Conservative Insurance" if Flo would perhaps be replaced with, say, Glenn Beck instead???? (...I think I like Flo better!)

Yeah, in your case Ian, that might be a good idea.
In fact, I think I've heard that the Conservative Insurance Company of Ruby Ridge Idaho gives a 20% discount to each and every policy holder who owns a motorcycle that has a kickstarter on it!!!!
(...AND if the bike has a breaker points ignition system, I've heard that there could be an ADDITIONAL 15% off of THAT!!!)

I have several that run off a magneto stock from the factory, does that get me a bigger discount? One of them even has manual timing advance.

OH! A "magneto", you say?! YEAH! In fact, you're REALLY in luck HERE, Ian ol' buddy! Word (again) is that if your motorcycle has a magneto system, the Conservative Insurance Company of Ruby Ridge Idaho will give ya a whopping 150% discount for THAT bike!
Uh huh! They'll actually send YOU a check each and ever month of half the amount that you would have sent them, JUST because the Conservative Insurance Company of Ruby Ridge Idaho feels all of their valued customers should be rewarded for their loyal patronage!
(...ya can't beat THAT, now can YA, you lucky to have a magneto bastard you!!!!)

Btw Ian, I forgot to tell ya that there's a REALLY big windfall to be had if any of your bikes have 100% of their original Lucas electrical system on 'em. Ya see, the Conservative Insurance Company of Ruby Ridge Idaho feels that because there always that possibility that your lighting system could fail one dark and dreary night while you're out riding on a bike such equipped, your policy will automatically have a TRIPLE Indemnity clause in the case of you accidentally riding off the road...because of the dark, once again...heaven forbid!

cheap business insurance rates really do vary greatly depending on what type of motorcycle you purchase. Your premium could be as low as $200 for a small or midsize, get you to work and back machine, to more than $1,000 for a fast, racing type of motorcycle. This is for every year you own the bike.

Conservative Insurance will drop you if you file any kind of claim, though. Personally, I use USAA which, in turn uses Progressive. They know which side makes sense.

South Carolina got wise to that. The South Carolina State Police have an insurance unit, Troop 10, whose title is "Insurance Enforcement" and their sole job is to act on loss of coverage notices they receive from Insurance companies. I've heard they're pretty efficient and pretty no-nonsense. They will retrieve your plates, and take whatever other actions are necessary...

USAA also directed me to Progressive, politics aside you pay a lot in Calif., $644.00 per year (to be fair I do have 3 points on my record, 1 for doing 122 mph in Boron, CA), Comp/Collision/Body Injury/Property Damages/Accessories. 500 deductible.
Ride like you mean it.

We have broadform in my state, less than $500 a year for any vehicle I drive, covers the state minimum reqs. Except motorcycles, broadform only covers cages. BTW, broadform is generally not advertised, you have to ask for it, saved me a fortune, having 4 licensed vehicles. How Progressive is that?
