nothing to worry about. my question was answered.
i like it when a thread takes on a life of its own.
as it turns out the link failed about 65 miles from my house on a very remote road. out of 5 of us only one had a signal and i was able to get my bike towed home.
it was on my klr and not my speedy. the chain snapped in 2 places, and took the sprockets with it. also put some nasty gouges in the swing arm.
