No. Maybe if you let it set for couple of hours, but to clean and wipe dry it won't affect the sealing rings

Well. Quality X-ring chains are actually much more expensive than sprockets, but your understanding is correct.
I use Tiki Torch oil to clean mine. Keeps the skeeters away too
