When I changed my chain yesterday. I was curious as to what wore out on the chain, so I did an inspection. This is what I found.
The lubricant on the inside was blackend or gone. With the o-ring I dont know how you could get lubrication inside the sealing ring anyway.
The exterior of the barrels were worn (not visibly), but measureable with a caliper. The interior pins were not (that I could see or measure). The side plates were measureably and visibly stretched.

(All the measurements and observations were based on the oem replacement chain.) I got 21000 miles on my chain. I didn't lubricate it. I am also curious as to how far others have gone with and with out lubrication. I mant to know if the scot oiler prolonged life based on cooling the chain while riding and preventing the side plate stretch.
I would also like to know if any of you have had a chain break on you. What part broke and so on.
