just a thought about the pipes turning brown, it is possible to induce rust into 300 series stainless steel. The most likely way to have this happen is to apply steel wool to the once nice stainless pipes. This would result in a brown discoloration.
FWIW, my scepters have approx 25,000 miles on them and they are just starting to be a uniform gold color. they used to be gold at the transition from the header but now it is across the whole pipe. I kind of like it and am not doing anything about it.
