As it seems to have become fashionable to bash the French on here, I'd like to know something.
Now I know for a fact that we have French members on this site. I know one of them personally and he is an outstanding person. I can't even imagine how he feels when he sees the bashing. I have never had a problem with the French or France. I sometimes don't agree with what their government does or how it acts but the people themselves? No...
So here's what I want to know. Why are you bashing the French people? (and please spare me the horsecrap about it all being in fun or any of the other jaundiced excuses. It's WAY too prevalent)

It doesn't bother me as long as it's directed at the French Government and not French people. Even though my nationality is French I think of myself as American. It's been 5 generations since my ancestors came from France to Canada and 3 generations removed from Canada. Therefore, I have very little loyality to France or Canada. My mother and father could speak french but none of us kids ever picked it up.

I would agree that I disagree with there Governments actions...but that being said I'm sure they disagree with ours (as do many of us)...Like all "steriotypes" they are based loosely upon fact...but much like "all birds have wings, but not all things with wings are birds" there will always be those in ANY sterio typed group that fit the bill there will ALWAYS be those who don't. There are pleanty of French who treat US citizens like Crahp, a lower class of person, the same could be said (obviously or this thread wouldn't be here) about how we treat them...Personally...look at my tag line...I may not agree with their politics but I sure love their wine!...as far as the People themselves...I judge them the same as I try to judge everybody...upon my perceptions after meeting them...

People have a tendancy to judge or stereotype an entire country and its citizens by the actions of its government... How does the rest of the world feel about us "dirty, rotten americans"? Why? Mostly because of our government.
BTW, I don't bash french people - they make some great toast!

It's a tradition. The Brits make fun of the French and the French make fun of "Le Bosch Anglaise". Been thay way for centuries. Much more civilized than what they do in the middle east.

Here's a couple examples: A friend of mine who was born in the Panama Canal Zone and became very familiar with the various Central American countries related this to me. When in the marketplace in any village, the natives take fruit from the top so that the seller can keep his stock rotated and always have edible produce on hand. The Americans who visit dig through the fruit to find the choicest pieces and then complain about the quality and try to pay less than the natives do. This is percieved as arrogance.
Q. What do you call a person who can speak two languages? A. Bilingual.
Q. What do you call a person who can speak three languages? A. Trilingual.
Q. What do you call a person who only speaks one language? A. American.
Obviously a generalization, but mostly true.

My mother was French and used to play scrabble with my aunts in french. Rather than teach me the language they used it to keep me from knowing what they were talking about. When I entered the room they would switch from English to French. Now, about all the French (spit) comments. Doesn't bother me one bit, in fact I think it's funny. I know it is meant to be humorous, and I am not thin skinned. In fact I may have made one myself.

Spot on.
We don't actually hate one another. Well, some may hate each other, but most "normal" Brits and Frogs like to make fun of each other all the time. Its just what we do.
I can say, I have been to France on a few occasions. Paris is without doubt one of the nicest Cities I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. Allthough it did seem that the vast majority of Pariseans are incredible rude people, including to themselves. Heck, the Pariseans even hate the French people. In fact, i think the only people Pariseans hate more than the Brits are the Yanks.
Ooh, am i allowed to say Yanks on here.

Its nothing personal. Just in my opinion a guilty national pride on their part. We saved their butts twice in the last century and you would think they could reciprocate a bit.
My Aunt and Uncle got a free trip to Paris a year ago and that was why they went... it was free.
My Aunt accidentally pointed her finger at a group of Frenchmen and they all "surrendered" on the spot.
Force of habit I imagine.

Exactly Greybeard, Arsenalfan. It is traditional, I donĆ¢âā‰āĀ¢t think England and France have ever particularly got on with each other. Their culture is somewhat different to ours and countries a bit too close for comfort, like annoying neighbours to each other I suppose. I donĆ¢âā‰āĀ¢t particularly dislike the French nor would I any race, although the French exchange student from hell I had staying when I was a kid didnĆ¢âā‰āĀ¢t help Anglo-French relations much. I take every person as I find them, not on where they come from. The jibes we make are mostly good natured but with deliberate intent to offend a little, itĆ¢âā‰āĀ¢s just the done thing, like the English bashing the Welsh and the Scottish bashing the English and the Welsh bashing the English and the English bashing the Scottish, Americans bashing Canadians and visa versa and on it goes...not very PC I suppose but there again is PC causing more problems than itĆ¢âā‰āĀ¢s solving?

PC SU(KS!!! It is the root of far more problems than it ever began to solve! When all the terrorists are of middle eastern decent yet we can't screen middle easterns because it concidered Racial Profiling WTF!!!! so we do random searches of 90 year old laidies for terrorist!!!! Like most good plans...Welfare, ACLU, PC, OSHA, War on Drugs, Minimun Hireing quotas, and so on....they start off with good intentions...but get perverted (not in a good way ) into something else...Girls suing BoyScouts for discrimination....come on already! So you hate the French or the Scotts, or the Welsh, or the Americans...so what! At least if your honest and not just being PC I can judge yo for who you are...not who you think I want you to be! I am who I am...if you don't like my views then don't hang with me...if I don't like your's I won't hang with you! Like that ball player...who's name escapes me, Roker...whatever it was...you may think he's an A$$ hole, but at least he had the qehonas to say what he thought regardless of public oppinion or PCness, and for that I admire him...totaly disagree with his opinion, think he's a total whack job...but admire his willingness to speak it. Rant over....

Q. How many frenchmen does it take to defend Paris? A. Nobody knows it's never been tried.
Q. How many gears does a French tank have? A. 4 reverse and 1 forward, in case the enemy attacks from the rear.
Q. What do you call 100,000 French Infantryman? A. The Army.
Q. Why did the French plant trees along the Champs Elysees A. So the Germans and lance Armstrong could ride in the shade.
Have you seen the French military rifle on Ebay? Its never been fired and only dropped once!

I have quite a bit of french in me. I don't mind the occasional spit comment if it's meant in fun, but we have to be REAL carefull on the internet. One's intent and tone of voice does NOT come thru in the text, even with all the emotocons (like Grumps... we know he meant well but...). So trad lightly boys!!

Hey Phil Like GB says: Quote:

Goes back a long way I'm afraid. Many nations dislike the English ... I suppose the English dislike many nations too! (Hey GB, would that be more acurate that the French call us "Roast Beefs" ?).
I've only met the French people in a commercial sense. Namely as a consumer and they've been great. They've put up with my crap French and I've understood their English (didn't the French decide not to speak English a while ago? didn't they refuse to play English / American music and films etc?).
Funny story: When I went to Normandy last September with the RAT guys, myself and two guys in our party spent a very enjoyable evening getting totally mullered with the guy and his wife who owned the nearby bar. We chewed the fat from around 10pm until approx 3:30am when my so-called hard drinking comrades gave up!
Next night was a bit wierd though, when we arrived, he was already VERY drunk and we, well, weren't. We had a couple but he was in what can best be described as 'a funny mood'.
He turned to us and said " ..the French hate the English and the English hate the French .. ". As the bar was frequented by 'locals' and it was next to a very seedy area, we took that as our signal to retire for the evening!!

I'm French, Canadian AND Polish. I can't catch a break. An anecdote to lighten the mood... In college I had to share a (largish) cubicle at the USDA office in Fort Collins, CO, with another "stay-in-school" student employee. I was incharge of the phone system and phone and network wiring, he was the shipping and receiving clerk. He was contantly stacking boxes on my side of the cube. I'm French (Canadian) and Polish, with a smidgeon of English. He was German and Italian. For a couple of years the running joke was that our cubicle was WWII revisited everyday, Axis vs. Allies. He kept trying to encroach on my terrority until I drove him back. (Oh GREAT, now I've probably offended the Germans and Italians...)

For Sale: One french (spit) Army Rifle. Never been fired and only dropped once. That's why. I've had a couple french (spit) girlfriends and yes, for day to day living - great people. The history of their government is questionable at best. The only wars they are credited with winning are the ones they got involved with after the battles were won. We are still paying them for repairs for damage sustained during WW2 and they slap the USA in the face whenever we embark on any cause, just or unjust. COWARDS - the lot of them. If your french (spit) friends live here - ask them why. Then tell them if france (spit) is so great the get the H377 out of our country. There is nothing wrong with AMERICA that leaving won't take care of. My heritage is Irish, Scot, and Cherokee. I am proud of all, but can declare allegience to none of them. I am not Irish American or Scot(ch) American or African American or German American. And I dang sure ain't no french (spit) American. My desire for the USA is to tear down the statue of liberty and load her on a barge - ship her to france (spit) and run her ashore. Send our troops, unannounced to france (spit) to dig up the remains of good, decent, loyal Americans who died defending france (spit) twice, and remove them from that cowardice soil. Use the Statue Of Liberty barge to return those remains to a land that appreciates their sacrifice. france? (spit) She's anybody's dog that will hunt with her. I think of france (spit) as I do Arab nations - but I do have a little respect for Arab nations.

Ah, the Fench have been sulking for oh about 800yrs, cause we stole a flag off them (The Cross of St. George). Heck thinking about it we have been at war with them for 800 odd years and 'friends' for about 80yrs. So we mutually extract the urine out of each other - this is expected and excepted, beats going back to war with them. In fact if you think about it we are a common people only divided by language(they don't speak English) and a sense of humour. Paul

It this because they would not give to veterans? This is an urban legend and completely false. http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/target.asp
Is it because Target is French owned? Another urban legend and again false.
Guess what? The Target Corporation is a publicly held U.S. firm which has been based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, since it began as the Dayton Dry Goods Company in 1902. Target is not now, nor has it ever been, foreign-owned. http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/target.asp

Couldn't agree more...it is at the top of my favorites list, and ANYBODY who sends me a "so called truth email" that has failed to check snopes before forwarding it to everyone-they-ever-met-in-their-life, typically gets a scathing email from me and to all of their reicipiants, informing them of how stupid they look for forwarding it, and a link to the " truth about their mistake " most will then add to their favorites as well...especialy after looking like such a clown
