I grew up riding with Shoei's. Now that Im older I usually wear a helmet but not always. I have to wear a helmet when I ride the 65mi to work because I work on base and its the rule.
I currently wear a Joe Rocket Carbon Fiber rkt101, it's light and comfortable, but noisy as all hell, and as I sit on the BA the vents dont work, and the up flow from the chin bar causes my eyes to water.
My buddy that owns a local shop pointed out that some helmets are designed for sportbikes due to the curve of their shell, and he's correct that when I tip my head down like i was on a sport bike this helmet is quieter and the vents work great.
So what do you wear, and how do you like it, and does anyone know how to select a good helmet for a crusier?
I have to buy something else and before I go back to a $600 Shoei I'd like to hear what yall have to say!
Thanks

I have a Fulmer Hombre half helmet, it's getting old and the pad is not as tight anymore on my head so it moves around too much. I don't wear it as much anyway because I have a Bell Apex full face that is really comfortable as long as it's not above 90ยบ outside. The Bell was $104 shipped.

A lot depends on how much protection you want. Full face, 3/4 helmet, 1/2, skull cap are all options out there. A great deal depends too on if you run with a windshield or not as in, do you need a face shield? I have a variety of helmets and switch up depending on weather mostly. But I must say, I'm leaning towards my next helmet being a modular. Those seem to make a lot of sense to me.

Phil Reed Replica Arai full face, basically a Arai Vector (Chaser in EU) with Phil Reed paint. Love it, comfort, fit, vision, wt., venting all excellent. http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/arai-vector/I also own about six cheap DOT approved Davida replicas in various paint schemes from flat black to Union Jack. What I wear on any give ride depends on speeds, distance and weather.

Z1R. Less than $100, but won Motorcyclist's "Blowing the Lid Off" comparison of a couple years ago. Transmitted the least amount of G forces to the head of any helmet, including Arai & Shoei. Also I would never wear anything but a full face helmet. This is why. Icon Agressor. Flipped over 8 times. Saved my face.

I used to wear an old Yamaha 1/2 helmet from 1966 that came with one of my grandfathers bikes. kind of like an old football helmet inside, now I don't wear one at all unless in a state that requires it.

I wear a black open face Lazer. It is light, comfortable and has leather around the strap which has a quick release button.

I never did ask if you bought a new helmet yet. You single-handedly validated my decision 9 years ago to go full-face or modular. Even in those first few years when I was riding around primarily with a bunch of Harley guys who wouldn't wear so much as a beanie helmet. I always got weird looks but no one said anything negative.

I had a Fulmer 3/4 sans faceshield for a while, then a month ago, picked up a Shoei Multitec for longer, quieter trips. The Fulmer's now gathering dust and I pop open the Shoei at almost every stop. $386 delivered.

Nolan N43, the most flexible helmet on the market. Light, plenty of airflow for summer and a huge field of vision. http://www.nolanhelmets.com/n43trilogyncom.htm

Why is a modular better than a full face? question#2 What is a good helmet for hot weather say 90 degrees or hotter?
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

Shoei gives good scalp ventilation. I find a full face is actually cooler in very hot weather - less sun and wind on the face reduces dehydration.

I'm on my second HJC Symax. If I needed a new one I'd opt for the Symax 2 since they don't make the original Symax any more. And the price is good too: SYMAX 2

With a modular you can flip up the chin bar, not just the face shield. Not for riding though, the wind catches the raised portion.
Makes conversations and seeing what you're doing while fueling, etc. much easier without taking the helmet off.
I wear mine all the time, even in the 115ยฐ+ heat we get in the summer here. It's well ventilated and much cooler than the hot air blowing in your face at any speed above 10 mph.

There are times when I'm just trying to burn as many miles as possible, and if I get my earbuds in just right, I don't want to take off my helmet when I fuel. Sure I could do that with a full face (and did for the first few years) but it's much nicer to open up the chin bar and get some "fresh" air.

Holy farg....! Yesterday I tried out a full-face/modular. Claustrophobia set in INSTANTLY upon dawning said helmet!! Logic SCREAMED full-face... psychological reactions dictated otherwise! In a span of maybe 20 seconds it was all I could do to get the helmet off fast enough! I felt I couldn't hear... or see... or be a part of my surroundings! Hey, I know full-face/modular are a VERY sensible choice in helmets... but it seems I suffer from claustrophobia and full-facers put me in a state of panic. Calling Alan Griffin (Alscot) our resident shrink... ya gotta help me out here!!

I have the Sparx S-07. Retrostyling in a fullface and price was right. I think I paid around $125.00. I had a Nolan Modular that I paid over $300.00 for and hated it. I have tried on the new Nolan N-43 series and WOW lightweight and an incredible field of vision, not to mention the flip down sunscreen. I hope to go another couple of years before needing one, but right now that is looking really good Try one of those on Keith, you might have better luck.

Some days Shoei St Cruz Three button is standard size, so off brand shields and visors will fit. Big SHOEI decal on front peeled off with little effort. I left the DOT sticker on the back for those states that may require to see it. Others Vega Summitt II modular, usually around $100 off ebay The winter version is the same helmet as the summer, but ships with a breath deflector and double shield. Only complaint - forehead area is slightly abrasive cloth. Had to put tape over it for cushioning. Perhaps that has changed in newer models. Don't know. I bought some extra shields in case the company vanishes. I think they were $20 each? Next helmet - white. Black is too warm As far as $400 helmets go, if they are very comfortable, then I bet they are worth every penny to the buyer. I tend to be cheap, and got lucky with the Vega. It's good enough for a po boy.

+1 on the Scorpion. For me it's about the inner lining. Most helmets (including Shoe and others) have a seam that goes horizontally across the forehead. SO does the Scorpions, but they have turned the seam "up" so that it doesn't dig into the forehead. Result is a more comfortable fit. I use the 100 most of the time and the 3/4 face (200?) in the winter. Not much for full face, come to think of it not much on helmets except under certain conditions; highway, bad weather, etc. Personal choice and all that.

I wear this during the spring/fall and this one during the summer. I like the fit of the Vega half helmet,it stays put and doesn't try to strangle you on the highway. I have an old Shoei full face I wear during the winter.

I really liked the fit & finish of the C3 I tried, but for some reason the strap laid right across my Adams Apple. That made it a no-go for me.

I can relate. I wore full face back in the early 80's, but when I tried them again recently, I felt the walls closing in. I still wanted a full-face for interstate riding, so I went with the modular. I find myself frequently riding with the chinbar up and only pulling it down once I hit the highway.
I think Shark makes a modular designed to be used with the chinbar in either position.
Oh and one final word... Xanax.

No, but that logo is on with tape, peel it right off.
That said, I love my 3/4 Scorpion EX-200. Flip up visor used in cooler months converts to a visor for summer. Vents, removable liner. Best helmet I've ever owned and they are priced competitively. I'm still rocking the "S"....
