Surface rust is easily removed using a rag dampened with any clean oil. Preferably the same oil in the scott oiler. Use kerosine if you feel the need to clean. Lift rear wheel of the ground, dab your rag in the oil and while using your left hand to spin the rear wheel, hold the chain with the oil laden rag. When ya are dun, wipe as much oil off as you can...If the rust is more than surface rust, say hello to a siena colored chain!
