You know, I read your first post and did not respond as I thought you were sorta right in your actions. Then I read your second post and thought if you were so right why were you chastising us for not reponding with cheers and atta boys. If I do something that is right for me I don't give a rats a$$ what other people think of it. Personally I think you handled it completly wrong. The right way to handle this was to get the local cops involved and press charges. They go to jail, you get $580 more dollars to spend as you wish and you teach your son how to handle a problem without going caveman. Your hearts in the right place but your head was not in the game at the time. Good luck with the rest. ModelMaker

Congrats and it working out. I've been lucky in what's turned out raising my 3 kids and me not getting in trouble. I have the tendency to go a little crazy about things, so your story is a good one for me to keep in the back of my mind for next time I consider going Gonzo on some SOB who sorely deserves it! Sorry bout the gun issue, at least your still sleeping at home and not the bars motel (the pillows there really suck)!
later, Tom.
But, what do I know?

No guns! I hope they are not forcing you to sell them. Can you take them to a friend for safe keeping for the year. It seems the law finds any excuse to take them away. Well pard, visuallize the perfect target every day and next year you will make the grade. Dave

ModelMaker, i wasn't chastising anybody, i was only asking why...all i was expecting was good luck wishes not unamimous endorsement...i felt it would be in keeping with the spirit of this group. it wasn't cheers and atta boys that i was after...
you also don't know the whole situation, so it's easy to make suggestions as to what i 'shoulda done' according to you...i live in a small town that has no police...the nearest RCMP detachment is 30 minutes away, IF they are able to respond immediately...the drunks and rednecks in this town know that...that's why they drink and drive, run around the streets on quads and snowmobiles at all hours of the night...the town's only gas station, coffee shop and grocery store has closed because 300 people couldn't or wouldn't support it as a local business providing needed services...but guess what? the bar is still going strong!!!
so, while my kid's being given booze and drugs by other kids whose parents think this is an OK way to keep them busy on a Friday night, i should call the cops and wait for 30 minutes ...most likely hours? ...f**k that noise...i'll go get him, and woe to anyone who stands in my way, or mouths me off while i'm doing it...
you're right about the rat's a$$...i don't need your approval...if you're ever in that situation, you handle it your way...i WAS in that situation, and i handled it my way...it's like combat...you never know how you'll react til you're there...

Good news David.
Could've been worse - he could have impounded your bike !!!
Good news for you - put it behind you, don't shoot the guy when you get your gun licens back and enjoy your freedom!
(EDIT: DOH!! Like no gun license would stop someone shooting someone else!! It's been a long day, OK??!!!)

thanks, Tom...it's pretty hard to keep a lid on things when your family's involved...i'm afraid i was really on the edge that night because of all the other goings-on in that town since i moved there...ModelMaker makes a valid point, to a certain degree...it might've been better for my kid to see me handle it differently...but sometimes circumstances deal us a hand we have to play...i'm actually glad it didn't escalate further than it did...my whole family would stand to lose if i ended up in jail..so keep that in mind if you ever need to rescue any of your own..

Glad to here you're still on the loose. Sounds like the judge was fair. It stinks that you have to go through the BS with the guns, anger management and Parole. It could have been much worse.

Old Wolf, of course none of us can know anyone elses situation entirely, so I may be out of line. But that sounds to me like a really good place to have used to lived.

The judge must have gotten laid before your case. It seems that he did the minimum that he could get by with for whatever charges you had. As a father of three, I understand your anger. It looks like everything will level out in a year or so, as long as you keep cool. If I were in your shoes, I'd make myself a promise to follow the courts orders exactly. I wouldn't put the judge in a position where he has to find me in contempt of court (ignoring or violating any of the conditions of the findings). The authorities probably don't blame you for your actions privately. Best of luck and High Fives for taking action when you had to. You didn't have time to ...well what if... A friend once said on the what if subject, What if?? Hell, what if a frog had a back pocket? He'd carry a pistol and wouldn't worry about snakes!!

I know how you feel about parents who aren't accountable for their own actions. I work at a young offenders facility and a common theme is not just the lack of parental supervision but parents actually lying to authorities on behalf of their kids. One such parent comes to mind, he actually got up on the stand during his sons court appearance (I was there for youth review) and when the judge asked him why he had such a lack of control over his son, the man went into this big tyrade about how he can't be taking care of his son 24 hrs a day and that he cant sit up late every night making sure his son doesn't sneak out despite a probation order curfew. He then went on about how it should be the RCMP and Social Services responsibilty to ensure that his son is complying to all the probation requirments and that they wouldn't be in court had these agencies done their jobs in the first place (just so you know, the kid was initially in trouble for severely assaulting a much smaller person). The worst part is I think this guy actually believes his crap and expects the world to believe it too. Like once his son is old enough to drive and get into trouble on his own, the parents hands can be washed of all responsibility. Sure Pi55e5 me off!

you got that right, bigbill...our house has been listed for a few months now...winter is a bad time to try and sell, though...i would rather have waited another year, too...it would've just been a better time... but if we don't get what we want, we may very well wait out another year...

OW glad to hear that you are satisfied with the result. No kids of my own but if my nephews had been put into that situation I'd have been in jail for sure.

I just read this. I think you did the right thing, not that my opinion matters, and am sure your son learned a valuable lesson. I had a simmilar experince, and you got off CHEAP. Dosent change a thing, I'd do it again. I think your son learned responsibalty over this, and that he is your #1 concern. You might try to convince him to do as you say, not to do as you do!

I don't know...I ain't got no kids(yeah I KNOW that's a double freakin' negative...leave me alone ), BUT...parenting always seemed to me to be a pretty thankless job. That is, I guess, unless you can live long enough to see YOUR KIDS reach THEIR FIFTIES!!!(Hell...and THAT might not even be OLD ENOUGH) 'Cuz....from my OWN experience, most kids(and, that's ANYBODY under 50, once again) only BEGIN to get a friggin' clue about how most of their parents have tried(at least FEEBLELY) to steer their vacuous little lives in the right direction(often to little avail), until they're old enough to have their own little twits become "teen-RAGERS".(and once again, that new parental generation is only STARTING to "get it" then) And so this circle of ineptness and lack of experience flows from generation to generation to generation!!!(witness those clowns in the Middle East that are even bigger idiots than WE ARE, for a REALLY GOOD example of this phenomenon) SOOOOO...All this stuff has only once again proved to me that basically.......PEOPLE SUCK! BUT...at least there's GOOD NEWS in MY CASE! You see....I'M A REASONABLY HAPPY MAN! (did I mention that I had no kids???) Cheers, Dwight (I keep tellin' you guys...MORE DOGS, LESS PEOPLE, IS THE ANSWER...at least there's a REASON for them four-legged numb-skulls not usin' the old noodle!!!) (oh...and Dave....good luck in sellin' that house o' yours...I mean it dude)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)
