You know, I read your first post and did not respond as I thought you were sorta right in your actions. Then I read your second post and thought if you were so right why were you chastising us for not reponding with cheers and atta boys. If I do something that is right for me I don't give a rats a$$ what other people think of it.
Personally I think you handled it completly wrong. The right way to handle this was to get the local cops involved and press charges. They go to jail, you get $580 more dollars to spend as you wish and you teach your son how to handle a problem without going caveman.
Your hearts in the right place but your head was not in the game at the time.
