I just went through that myself. It had been acting up intermittently, then developed a screach that I finally was able to attribute to it and not something else - just before she crapped out altogether. Non-repairable. New head about $300 (BikeBandit).
I got lucky and another member here sent me his stock speedo, so until it happens again, I'm fixed for now.
Lots of nice aftermarket options though. I'd take a big tach on the bar and a smaller speedo in the console - but I'm not one to want to have to engineer it all up. Plug 'N Play for me.
