In those tight turns I wonder why he does a kink the opposite way first. Obviously it helps but I wanna know why.

I have the videos... it gets you positioned both physically and mentally. If you go into some of those maneuvers head on you wont make it. Think if it as a warm up also.

I was going to call it a "counter-steer initiator." Kind of a wuss move but hey, whatever works...

I do it every time I make a U turn in the middle or the road it comes very natural.

That little kick to the opposite is like a wheel on casters. Its just enough to make the tire swivel in the opposite direction. try it, it will make your turns a lot tighter. And DON'T LOOK DOWN! TURN THAT HEAD!

I still don't get it. Counter-steering doesn't work under about 15kph ... and as evidence, if you watch the video carefully, his bike always goes in the direction the wheel turns - both on the kick outwards and in the u-turn. Just trying to get my head around it.

Been through the course twice and I loved it.
The quick turn in the opposite direction causes you to start leaning and turning before your wheels reach the edge. It allows you to make a tighter turn in the same space.

This whole counter-steering thing is a bit over-stated, IMO. It's a relatively new term used to explain something that just comes naturally... instinctively. Back in the day, before the term was invented the idea of steering a bike wasn't even a 'thing.' I mean there I was back in the '50s learning how to ride a bicycle and no one had to explain how to steer it. I wanted to turn, and the bike turned... at any speed.
Just an observation.

Its hard to dispute guys that have this level of skill and control. These guys are turning tight with big bikes.
When you dissect something like this you understand it better. Making it teachable then it becomes a system that can be improved upon.
I rode intuitively for years till I read an article on countersteering. I started practicing it I found that my ability to maneuver the bike increased exponitially.

Have 3 of the videos. Well worth it, I think the zig is to break the bikes balance allowing it to flop a little easier

Very useful video. I always can use a refresher and am always learning (and critiquing my riding technicque). Thanks!!

Same here Chad.
Thanks Dwight and Steve - I think both answers are probably true. I can see how it may take a bit of time otherwise to get the bike leaning in so tight a circle. And because it's slow and no counter-steer it's tempting to try and keep the bike upright as much as possible.

Counter-steering is a real thing Keith. If I'm too wide or too hot in a turn, my salvation is looking through the turn and counter-steering. I can't force the bike into a tighter turn by leaning or will-power but I can crank on as much counter-steer as I need to. Works for me!

Oh yes Bill, of course! It is THE way to make it through corners over a certain speed... I understand that. I was just saying the mechanics of steering are instinctive. Somehow once we learned to keep our balance on a bicycle we naturally found our way through turns. The term counter-steering can and has confused many a newbie as they struggle to grasp the logic in it all. Anywho... carry on, it was just a thought that passed through my mind.

I'd like to be able to do a u-turn like in the video, but am worried I would drop my bike practicing. Maybe I need to get a beater bike for this stuff. I s'pose I could use an old Harley for that...

I had the same concern...I just started with bigger circles and got tighter and tighter. Next thing I knew my pipes were dragging in a complete circle. This was two seasons ago and its true....practice practice or you'll forget. I need to dig out my tennis balls and go practice again.

and I agree with you as well Chad. When I had it explained to me, and started practicing it, my riding really improved.

Was riding with my son saturday. While in a parking lot waiting for a friend we decided to practice those maneuvers. I was amazed at how tight we got our turn radius down to.

correct. To get the contact patch that close to the cones without having a lean on already, would result in knocking down cones. When the bike is leaned the bits & pieces that may contact the cones are leaning up & away. Valuable inches .
