Its looking more likely Im getting rid of the Triumph now and going over to the dark side of Harley. Tomorrow Im out on a test ride, was hoping the big bore kit (904) would keep me happy but alas.. it just didnt do enough and I am dissapointed in the performace of the bike.. I need more torgue So, in the event I do go I would like to thank those of you that have helped over the last few years when I asked for help, YOU all delivered. Your a great group of RAT people and I have lots of respect for you... ride safe. Theres a lot of extras I will be selling off.. Ill post here before eBaying the lot..

Harley, Triumph... I like 'em both and encourage you to stick around. After all, you're gonna need a lot of help keeping that HD running!

I don't think harley is going to give ya what you are looking for either then. I don't have a 904 but still out perform most of the Harleys I run against. My only mods are carbs rebuilt and open exhaust. Horsepower (bhp) 54. Torque (Ft Lbs) 51 at 490 lbs. Wieght to hp ratio is 1 : 9.1 for the stock TBA. 904cc - 70 - 78 HP. 62 - 66 ft. lbs* bike wieghs 490 lbs. that is 1 : 6.3 hp to wieght ratio 1450 twin cam 95 HP. Torque (Ft Lbs) 92 bike wieghs 639.3 pounds that is 1 : 6.7 hp to wieght ratio> This is for a dyna glide which has the best wieght to hp ratio of all Harleys.

You want torque? Rocket 3 Roadster. Miles cheaper than a spec'd up H-D and having done a few miles on two different H-Ds, my R3 wins hands down. Each to their own, it's a free world ... apparently.

My thoughts exactly. At least go test ride the R-III and Thunderbird also before you are lost to the darkside. Just remember when you buy a Harley you will have the same bike as 4 out of 5 bikers on the road.

Yeah, I'm a little baffled myself, but whatever. It's no reason to leave the site if you feel like you've made any friends here at all.
But if you go, once you regret your Harley purchase you're welcome to come back anytime. I can't help but wonder if it's more than just "torque" and that maybe you're buying into the hype.
Just consider that for the money of a Harley hopped up enough to give you what you think you want (assuming the Rocket III is out of the question), you can still go bigger with your current bike, 1000, 1100, 1200. Or turbo. Far cheaper than screwing around with a Harley that will still break down much more frequently. Hell, at least get a Victory. Much better engine design.

This may be a less expensive option BP(british performance) 989 Piston kit 989cc - stroker 88-94 hp 70 - 74 ft lbs.* hp to wieght ratio 1 : 52.

My husband has a HD V-Rod, that's got all the torque one would need. He's from a Sport bike world too. His last bike was a Kawasaki ZX14, now that's got speed. He loves his V-rod, almost went to a R-III Sportster, but didn't like the weight of the bike. To each his own, but just be sure and ride as many as you can before you put your money down. Victory are great bikes too, try it out. Good Luck

Seriously? If ya want a Harley, that's cool, go for it because ya want it. But because you want more power/torque You won't get it from H.D. unless you go with a V-Rod. Or maybe an expensive CVO setup. T-Bird, Rocket III, Victory. Many better ways for more power.

OK, read all the comments so far and maybe a bit more info from me.... My mate picked up a 883, nothing special and I was happy playing with him, me on my Triumph was fine.. then he spent like 2 hours putting on a 1200 kit and now I got no chance. Bear in mind the time it took me to go from 790 to 904! He opens up from about 40mph and he is gone, me, I got to downshift and crank her up just to keep up... Crikey, he can even pull wheelies on the thing... the deed as of now has NOT been sealed, its all about the test ride, but if the one Im looking at handles like his then its done. We shall see

The 883 is a small light bike. You would have to do the same to get what he has from a harley. It would be nice if they made a big bore kit for ours that was a jug, head, pistons, and wrist pins. Instead of that bore and sleeve mess.
I still think this may be a cheaper way of getting what you are looking for.
989cc - 10.5:1 compression 92mm bore kit designed for all Triumph powered twins post 2001 for street application. This kit requires the following engine modifications and components: BP 989 Piston kit Barnett Clutch and Spring Kit Bore & Sleeve factory Cylinders BP MLS Gasket kit Remove Crankshaft Counter Balancers install Dynamically balanced Stroke Crankshaft 6mm Carrillo Rods 989cc - stroker 88-94 hp 70 - 74 ft lbs.*
Not that what I say matters at all.

My buddy has a Sportster and complains about the small fuel tank. Apparently they're not great for longer journeys.

I see where your going but lets look at this money wise,
Harley 883 £4800 on a 2007 plate Triumph £3500 trade in 2005 plate
I got a mate who has pistons and sleeves = free, so gaskets and bore = £ 150 (est)
I just got a cheap kit for the Triumph to get to 904 and that came in at £600 (I fitted it)
The money argument falls down.. Tomorrow I ride the 883 that Im interested in, also going to take a ride on my mates hacked 1200 to compare.
Will report back ASAP

Jeezus, grow up. What happens when you get an identical Sportster and he still beats you because he can ride better? When does the dickwagging contest end? Just get a Rocket III Roadster and be done with it.

I've sat on a few Sportsters and they are so darn tiny, particularly the Nightster, they almost seem small scale. I'm only 5' 11" but would never be able to ride one comfortably. I'm interested to hear your feedback. I rode a 96 ci Wide Glide last year and was disappointed in the power of the stock motor. The sales guy said for a few grand I could "wake it up". Sure, for $20k out the door for a Glide with motor work, I guess it better be awake....

Hmm. I don't have a problem moving to a harley, but to out gun the triumph? I'm not getting outgunned by any of the ones I ride with and that includes a buddy's modded 1200. Maybe they have sponge feet, but they have a hard time keeping up with me till we get to some really high numbers. Then the big bores start to earn their money. But how much time can you spend at those speeds. I mean, I do have to wind her up a bit on the take off, but noooo prob.
To me Harley's are works of art. I think they lookand sound really great. And some probably ride great as well. But how many harley riders do you pass that have THAT grin. You know the one I'm talkin about.

I didn't know you were allowed to say dickwagging on here.
Seriously though, leave the guy alone, everyone is different (except me) we all make our own decisions for what ever reasons and no-one should force thier opinions onto other people. I personally like Harleys too. Go for it I say and stay around cause I wanna see pics. You might have to incorporate the cost of a ute{pick-up} in your calculations though hehehe only kidding mate.

performance rating for the 883 with 1200 up grade kit. 68.9 hp and 67.8 foot pounds of torque.
904cc - 70 - 78 HP. 62 - 66 ft. lbs.
I think some thing else is wrong could be sproket gearing.

Hey! If Terry wants to buy a new XR1200 then I say good for him! THAT is one cool bike AND the proverbial anomaly...a Harley-Davidson motorcycle that is actually fun to throw around in the twisties!
Oh, wait a minute. He said he wanted to buy your run-of-the-mill Sportster, eh?!
Never mind then.
(...he'll soon learn on his own that his "plan" wasn't the best idea and'll come back to the Triumph fold again...just you wait and see!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Good luck anyway Terry. The way I look at this type of thing is, "first time's a learning experience, second time's a mistake".
If you come back it was just a learning experience.
All I know is, I appreciate machinery of all descriptions. Hey, even my missus hates Harleys due to the amount of wankers she sees riding them.
So for me it's not the bike's themselves even though they're totally over rated, it's the would be's if they could be's who want to buy "cool".
Everyone know's ya just can't buy that stuff. Ya got it or ya don't. The rest are just pretenders.

Hey, he started it. He didn't have to come on here and make some grand proclamation about leaving. His logic seemed faulty and when pressed he "fessed up" and revealed rather specious reasoning involving the comparison of his junk with his friend's junk. If he merely wanted a faster bike, well there are TONS of those available. As much as people want to deny it, our bikes are real small, at least in displacement. He can do whatever he wants, for whatever reason he wants, but if he's going to air it out here we are also free to call bull.
Years ago I drag raced a buddy down main street in Red Lodge, MT. I'm amazed we didn't get busted. What did he ride? A Honda VTX 1300 (not even the 1800) and he seriously toasted me. Did I run out and buy a 1300cc bike? No, I laughed my ass off because for the vastly disparate engine sizes I gave him a run. And the next day when we rode up Beartooth Pass I crushed him. Any idiot can go fast in a straight line. No thanks.
(Yes I still want a Rocket III, so what? I'm not getting rid of my TBA, ever.)

Exactly. Myself, I don't particularly like the Harleys but, mostly, I would rather not be associated with the bullsh** surrounding them.

Well, a 904cc to an 883cc sporty is a downgrade. Then he'll upgrade that to keep up. It's really more of a yo-yo-grade.

I don't know what the bullsh** is that surounds Harley. I like nice ones. My buddie has a flat black fat boy thats all hopped up, and rat rodded. I was using it to pull slip and sliders Saturday. He wanted me to use his bike for some reason. What do I care it was fun,and funny.

We shall see
If you guys are rollin 40 in top gear when he nails it and takes off its because he is low geared and probably don't have a very good top end. 40 is the bottom of 4th gear typically, and you really shouldn't lug the bike around like that. He probably has a huge front sprocket.

Chad's on the right track here.
Having to downshift to use the bikes power peak that just starts to come into it's own around 4000 rpm isn't a bad thing. That's why it has a transmission. Try nailing it in third at 40 mph and hit the limiter before you shift. These are higher revving engines than HDs, use it

Heck, if you're loping along with him, downshift two gears and punch it. These motors love high RPMs. Bounce it off the rev limiter and you may actually give him a run for his money ESPECIALLY with the 904.
