If he is that low geared. dropper into third, and bouncer off the rev limiter. I bet ya in a hundred yards he'll be trying to figure out how you passed him so fast you pulled the paint off his bike.

Years ago, I gave up a 40 cubic inch Triumph and "moved up" to an 80 cubic inch HD. It took me 2 years of work, including a big bore kit and stroker crank, and a lot of cash to make the HD almost as fast as the Triumph.

Now, I have a 48 cubic inch Triumph and a 96 cubic inch HD with pretty much the same mods on both. Overall, performance is about the same if they are run the way they should be. I have to admit though, that the Triumph is my favorite.

My favourite bikes in the whole wide world are the ones I own.

Hey Terry, go for it... no, let me up the ante one more notch and say... "go your own way!" Not 'their way', or 'my way', or even 'our way' but YOUR way. I would love to hear what you have to say after making the move!

CRUISER.

Interesting word that, don't you think.

Its what I bought when I no longer felt the need to pass, at any cost, the guy who has just overtaken me.

Its what I bought when I realised that speed cameras were breeding at an alarming rate.

Its what I bought when i realised that it was nice to actually see the scenery on a tour rather than have it all flash past in a constant blur.

In short, Its what I bought when I no longer had anything to prove.

It's simple If YOU want a Harley buy one, They are every bit as dependable as a Triumph, and you can even ride it in the rain without worrying about electrical problems. And as far as the BS surrounding Harleys, most of it is right here on this sight. Not trying to get a rise out of anyone ..... just sayin'

Good luck with the snortster. Remember to change out the feminine napkin in the ham can often.

as far as performance, I ran against my friend's Night Train from a rolling start when we were just putting along. He had a big bore kit and a 6 speed trans as well as a Dyno Tune slider for his injection. For the short run we had I was slowly pulling ahead of him. I only have open exhaust, rejetted carbs, crossover pipe cut out, and pod filters.I run the 16 tooth front sprocket and 42 rear. He would probably have me in the top end. I too like some of the old HDs but for me , for every HD I like there is a Triumph I like better. Like I would love to have a Knuckle but I would trade one for a 30s Speedtwin. So if you want a HD that's great but do it because that is what you want not from a lame performance excuse.

Well, John thats a matter of what you are depending on them to do. If you are depending them to give you trouble then they are dependable.

As far as wet riding, both Wendy and I have ridden through torrential downpours and neither one of our Triumphs missed a beat. Rode from here to the northern end of Vermont in heavy rains the whole way and the friend I was with also rode a BA and none of them missed a beat. Why a very few have wet weather issues I have no idea but it is for sure the exception rather than the rule.

As a former 883 Sportster Deluxe owner.. It was just a cute little bike. The motor was noisy, not rubber mounted and vibrated like crazy at 70mph. I was constantly looking for a gas station (small tank). If you want a bar hopper, it should do the trick. However, if you want to actually go for a ride, it's hard to recommend a Sportster. By the way, it was sold after eight months of ownership. The Softail Custom I owned was really nice. I just don't see the point of going from a Triumph to a Sportster. To each his own.

Didn't buy into the hype, you can keep the change.

You know guys, when he started this thread, Terry kept talking about the difference in torque figures between the 1200 Sportster and his Triumph.

Well, yes, the bigger displacement H-D V-Twin WILL have more torque than will the Triumph, and yes, the H-D will reach its peak torque figure sooner and lower down in its rev range than will the Triumph. However, and here's the key: At what cost to overall performance?

You see, the Sportster redlines at about 5500 RPM and doesn't have much more "grunt" after about 5000 RPM.

These Triumph Twins of ours redline at 7000 RPM and have smoooooooooooth and ever increasing and usable power all the way to that redline figure.

And so, I suppose if Terry wants better low-end grunt which comes a cost of a more limited powerband and more vibration, then that's what he wants!!!

(...but personally, I think if he goes ahead and satisfies his "want" here, he'll come to regret it later on...I know I would 'cause I LOVE the powerband and the smoothness these babies of ours give us!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Terry: enjoy the test ride and i'll be interested in what you think. I know when I was shopping I had settled on a sportster 'til i saw my green america. I never test drove the sportster but i liked the feel of sitting on it and the fit and finish of their bikes always impresses me.

My brother had a 1200 low boy. It was that bike mainly due to his vertically challanged condition. It fit him.
Stock it was good enough for him, He had owned a T100, but it was even too tall for him and the BMW even taller!

It does however sound a bit like your buddy has been dissing the TBA. So what if you have to spin it to get a jump start. We all know these bike like a high rev and that is what you have to do.
I love a good 80s FXR! and certain other HDs, like was mentioned here already. Its mainly the posers who get all arrogant and snub anything that is not a HD. REAL MOTORCYCLEIST dont care what you ride and If any HD guy is worth anything, they know that TRIUMPH IS an older company AND if it were not for TRIUMPH kicking HDs a$$ with the BONNEVILLE, the Sporty would have never been created.

Good luck,
(dont forget to shell out an extra grand for the stage 2 and new pipes, and kuri air charger)

My riding buddy and his wife both ride Harleys He casually mentions dropping money at the bike shop for this fix and that repair seemingly all the time. He has his bikes in the shop more times in a year than I've had my bikes in over the past three decades.

Your buddy's doing something wrong. My '97 Fat Boy has 51,000 mi. on it. I've done front and rear brake pads once, battery twice, clutch cable and 2 starter drives, best vehicle (out of at least 30 bikes and 30 cars) I've ever owned.

Could be, I don't know. I do know the shop at the local Harley dealer has a enormous backlog. Here's another one that I don't know but I've been told. A lubrication (because there are 3 different systems) change for a Harley costs $275 (which, even for three swaps, is absurd). I thought he was kidding but another fella said, yeah, that's what he pays. Maybe they are both pulling my leg

TOjAn,

Tell you what, you get the sportster and then setup the 1200 kit, and i'll throw a 813 cam in my speedy and we can have a go for pinks!

Seriously though, you should be riding whatever puts a smile on your face, weather it be a Triumph, horse, Honda, sheep, or Harley.

When I bought my Harley 30 years ago I was one of the first in the area I lived to have a Harley.
Everyone in Australia back then rode Jap bikes and the Harley craze was just starting to take off.
I paid alot of money for my Superglide and got admiration from people who wishes they could have one and I got bagged by motorcycle enthusiasts who thought Harleys were rubbish.
I used to tell them that I was happy on my Hog and it was the best bike in the world for me and if they didn't like em , well don't buy one. I bought it for me and soon there were more and more Harleys on the road.
I sold it after 6 years and used the money to buy the land I now live on. When I got back into bikes after I relocated and got back on my feet I bought an old 750 Honda because I have had a few over the years and I like em , some later day Harley owners have hung sh!t on my old Honda but do I care and do I need their approval. If people think for some stupid reason or other that they are better than you because of what you ride , well I give these short sighted heroes a wide berth. Dare to be different , taste the different fruits of the motorcycling world. I went for a ride on the old Honda with 3 Harleys and a Triumph Sprint owned by non judgemental biker friends and when we pulled up for fuel the Honda drew comments from other riders more so than the Harleys because the Harleys are so common.
Go and buy ya Sporty TrOjAn and don't feel you need to explain why you're doing it , that is unless there be just that small amount of doubt ... am I doing the right thing ?
JUMP and learnt to fly that new fangle contraption and may It bring you joy.

Right on Silky! Go on and do what she wants. It may work out and may not. She may end up wishing for the Triumph back, but a person has to learn one way or another. Let's not alienate a future potential returnee to the group.

Dog, I was wondering if you ever had to coat everything with dialectic grease or if you bikes were good to go without any preventive maintenance, that would be nice,I had to go over mine and coat everything or it would spit and sputter with a heavy dew.

No, my Triumph, and those of the hundreds of people I know here, are vastly more dependable than the dozens of Harleys belonging to people I know here in Helena. Are there dependable Harleys? Sure. My friend Jeff has a really reliable Harley. He's an independent Harley mechanic and can afford to keep his T-sport in tip-top shape. And it is fast. It's one of the few I can't keep up with on the straight OR the twisties. I can't even imagine what it would cost for a non-mechanic to reproduce the performance of that beast. He also set a speed record at Bonneville (heh) with another bike of his within the last few years. I think it's a dyna that he took to around 149mph (no bodywork, either). Those are some real fast Harleys.

Most of the things that have gone wrong with my bike were my fault (botched valve job) or aftermarket parts (weak belt drive kit). I've had exactly three things go wrong in 9 years, and only one of them was a show-stopper: rubber speedometer cable loop broke (replaced under warranty), rear brake switch stuck on (replaced under warranty) and my CDI malfunctions in the wet (after 8 years). Chances are I would've replaced that voluntarily anyway for the Procom's programmability. And I could probably "fix" my stock CDI with a $3.99 tube of silicone.

On the other hand, I've seen a Harley electrical system freak out because it was parked next to a sprinkler and got a little wet. I've seen a barely-more than a year-old Harley need a new alternator for hundreds of dollars because the one-year warranty was expired and it's incredibly labor intensive to replace. That just scratches the surface.

I don't have to own a Harley to know about the idiosyncrasies and problems and have an informed opinion.

If you gotta have a v-twin, go Victory.

I guess in reality its all objective, and everyone has to go by their own experience. It's like saying Ford is more dependable than Chevy, But if you owned 5 Silverados and 5 F150's you might have a different opinion than if you only had owned 1 F150. But I think telling someone to grow up is a little overboard, cuz in my opinion constant bashing of what other people like and saying MINES BETTER is also a form of dickwagging.

I don't think dickwagging applies to competing over reliability. That seems to be reserved for the realm of performance. I've described three bikes in this thread that are faster than mine, and I'm laughing about it. They SHOULD be faster. One of them, the Honda VTX, is probably more reliable than all the Harleys and all the Triumphs ever made.

Bashing other things is human nature. Most of it is good natured around here. When you set up a club there is always US and the OTHER guys. Just go over to the Brit Iron Rebels forum and try talking about a Speedmaster. This thread will seem like complete milquetoast by comparison.

I've owned a snortster and a prefire at the same time. The snortster was in the shop for oil leaks only. Holding maintenance as a constant, what amazed me was the difference in handling. Where the prefire is a ballerina, the snortster was a razor back pig. Short and stout she didn't grow up she grew out...

there aint a hd out there that can out handle either of my Triumphs and my prefire hasnt ever been outrun by any hd if i was wanting more, i would get me a T-Bird and then laugh at all my hd friends as they try to catch me on flat ground OR in the twisties. so to anybody, be they friend or family, that tells me that they are gonna buy a hd i always chuckle inside thinking "another one sucked in by the hype" and sucks to be them. anybody sez that they are thinking about buying a hd, i always say "ah grasshopper have you noticed how green the grass is over the septic tank" "life is full of options and decisions and sometimes we make the wrong choice and when that happens we learn" BUT, if we keep making the same wrong choices and dont learn than i can only conclude that we have an insanity problem.

Well took the Speedie out to the cruiser dealers 2 hours ago, went in and grabbed the Sportster keys, fired her up and on I jumped.

Went about 100 yards and thought.. god do I really want to take this down to the dual carriageway for a blast?

In short... NO, turned around and returned to the shop, dismounted, said sorry to my Triumph and left.

Without upsetting Harley owners but HTF do you put up with that!! Reckon the wife would have divorced me if I came home with that.. vibrations (she may like that bit ) noise, uncomfortable... I now understand the posts above..

Think Ill be staying with the speedie now I know what other options there are.. I just need to fix the rev meter and alarm and I should be good for another year or so

Thanks to all that replied, some a bit abrupt but then, I like that because they feel HONEST answers, sometimes it takes a bit of rudeness to get through the grey matter..

Thanks again, no doubt will be asking for help soon on the 2 remaining issues..

Dog, I was wondering if you ever had to coat everything with dialectic grease or if you bikes were good to go without any preventive maintenance, that would be nice,I had to go over mine and coat everything or it would spit and sputter with a heavy dew.

Haven't done anything electrics wise except run my wires inside the bars on both bikes and on my bike the headlight wires are moved under the tank because I installed a custom headlight that didn't have room for the wires. Didn't grease anything on either bike and my friends BA hasn't had anything done either.

Not really since I have owned both and the Chevys I had were far more dependable and handled better when loaded. I don't want to start a Ford vs. Chevy discussion here so I won't say anymore about it. Just want to say it is like you said, it depends on your personal experience. I used to ride with a guy who had an AMF Shovel that he rebuilt and he had a 1950 EL Pan and both were very dependable bikes. We rode all over together on them and me on my 66 TR6C.

my harley experience was in 1990.
i went to the motorcycle show in san francisco on my 700s night hawk that i bought wrecked and put back together. about $1000 invested. i rode a 1200 sporty. the course was about 10 miles around the cow palace in daily city.
the thing shaked and vibrated so much i thought it would fall apart. next to me was a guy on a heritage with the tour pack and that was vibrating just as much.
the price on the bike was just over $7000. i was never happier to drop off that bike and get back to my honda.

If it isn't broke, I haven't messed with it.

Don't mistake forthrightness with rudeness. If we didn't care we wouldn't say anything.

Better to find out she's a b**** while you're just dating than to suffer through an ugly divorce later.
