Ok.. so last night, I packed the shorties (pipes), put on the new coils, wires and plugs... and gave it a good cleaning. Looking sweet This morning, I put in the freshly painted battery bucket, connected everything and pushed the starter. She kicked right over and sounded beautiful... Fast forward an hour... getting ready for work. Put the key in, pressed the starter and heard the engine turn once... then BZZZZZT (ok, that sounded bad... let's try again) BZZZZZT So, I didn't have time to check anything, but I'm about 90% sure the starter motor ate itself I'm not happy. So, I'm thinking "well, there's another 400 bones". I just looked on BikeBandit and the motor assy is $858.22!!!!! Are you freakin kidding me!?!? Ok... mostly, this was just a rant, but if anybody knows of a cheaper place to get a starter motor (used, referb, whatever) please let me know.

Try Pinwall for a used one. Are you sure it's the starter?

I just called the dealership. The owner rec'd that I get the battery load tested before making any expensive mistakes. So... I'll try that at lunchtime. The reason my mind went there right away is because I may have done a few prolonged starting attempts last week (long time sitting and forgot to turn the damn fuel back on) so I was worried about the starter anyway. And the buzz makes it sound like the relay is clicking away and the starter motor is not doing anything.
Hell If it turns out to be the battery, I'll be a happy guy.

I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

I asked this in another thread, does anyone know if these starters can be rebuilt?

If all your diagnosis fails, drain your oil and take off the clutch cover (l. side) and check the starter idler gear to see if it broke out of it's bushing, mainly seen on 2005's

WHEW!! Never been so relieved to be wrong about something (and being wrong isn't exactly a rarity for me). Replaced the battery and it kicked right over. The only (small) problem I'm left with is the new battery is about 2mm deeper than the old one. And the battery box that I fabbed for it only had about 1.5mm clearance. So... here I go again. I'll probably just cut a plate and bolt it to the original battery tray like everybody else is doing.
