Due to spammers I am still manually approving every new account request. It's a PITA but is far easier than cleaning up the damage a spammer does when they get through.

That said...

Someone just tried to register an account that spoofs the name of an existing member. No, I'm not going to tell you who so don't ask. We've seen what kind of damage this does here in the past. I refuse to believe any good can come from this sort of thing and I consider it a form of harassment. That makes it a violation of the AUP, in spirit if not letter.

If you are unhappy with someone here, and THAT person is not violating the AUP, you have a few options:

1. Address your concerns with this person directly via PMs. I encourage you to build a bridge and get over it. Work it out.
2. Ignore the person. When you view a person's profile there is a link along the bottom that says, "Ignore this user." This will block 90% of their content. You will only see their posts when someone else quotes them.
3. Leave.

I will not allow personal vendettas to be acted out on this site. I'm sorry if you think this is unfair. You are apparently not in tune with the spirit of this site and this community. For chrissake, we just had anonymous people donate money to buy a member tires. THAT is the spirit of this site.

If I've misread this attempted registration I apologize, but I ask that you pick a different name and resubmit.

Thank you for your support.

Hey John we all appreciate your diligence in keeping the site safe and spammer free. Sucks that people spend valued time ruining other people's stuff.

Not sure what "spoofing the name of an existing member" even means but it doesn't sound good. In that light, I'm glad you were able to intercept it John.

Or even Hillman or Mountainwoman. Not saying those were the ones used, just an example.

That in and of itself is not a big issue, but in the past those kinds of accounts were used to start mocking/attacking/harassing people, usually the people for whom they are named.

Of course that was the old days when it was nearly impossible to get accounts deleted. That is no longer an issue.

Ah... now I understand. I'm not so 'cyber smart' to keep up with it all, a fact proven by my recent thread on being scammed. I do find the psychology of it all interesting though... kind of a study into contemporary human behaviour. Anonymity CAN yield interesting results, negative or otherwise.

Well, you're a useless git (I mean I guess so, it says so under your name) and I've never stopped you from having your say. Even when you're insulting me (poorly) in PMs.

Having only been active on this site for a little over a month and a half (is that really all it's been?), one of many things I have enjoyed is the help, humor, and friendliness of the real people here. I REALLY appreciate the work that goes into keeping it that way.
THANKS JOHN! and everyone else

I remember my late mother telling me once ... you can't get along with everyone dear so make the most of the ones you do get along with and ignore the others.
Me personally I pity those poor people who are driving/riding through life with a sh!t smeared windscreen.

What kind of person spoofs anothers and thinks its funny or would even bother the original guy. I probably wouldn't even get it if mine was spoofed. Mine is a spoof anyway of Crazy Horse, a personal hero of mine.

Oh, I know Ian.
I would tell but we have an AUP and I think the telling of the story would be a direct violation of said AUP.
Then John would nuke me from space, and I wouldn't see it coming. So that is a tale I will leave for a time less likely to offend the hearer.

.....and then from John Boy's "Book of Tools for Effective Communication", which he learned from a Sportster riding midwestern female Psychologist

**Face Saving; Yours and Theirs**; The short interpretation is “Public praise and private punishment”. If you have ever been reprimanded or embarrassed in public you’ll immediately know the reason why. The person you talk to will appreciate it. If there is an issue, speak respectfully in private, otherwise always, always keep your public comments about someone positive, particularly when they are not present. The positive side to respecting this rule is a greater sense of trust, you can avoid Power Struggles. Break this rule and response is guaranteed, it may sell papers, but doesn't solve many problems.

Apparently you haven't actually read the AUP, because there IS a process and a variety of potential outcomes...

BonnevilleAmerica.com may take any one or more of the following actions in response to complaints:

issue warnings: written or verbal
suspend the Member’s posting privileges
suspend the Member’s account
terminate the Member’s account
bill the Member for administrative costs and/or reactivation charges
bring legal action to enjoin violations and/or to collect damages, if any, caused by violations

I read it a few times. I know you are a letter of the law guy. I am not downing you, I would never. My statement was really more of a joke because the nature of the story can be quite upsetting to the.............well lets just say more civilized folks on here.

I know you are a fair guy John and have never doubted it ever.
