I'm trying to sell my Trophy and have it listed on Cragslist. Recently someone said they'd buy it and offered to pay via paypal. But it just sounds weird. Is there any way they could scam me? Here's the emails thus far...

Email # 1
Just viewed your listing and will like to purchase it please what is the condition and more detail of it.
Regards
Margret

I reply with more details.

Email # 2
Thank for your mail. am satisfied with your advert price,as am requesting this transaction should be done via PayPal so the PayPal charges is on me,If my offer is accepted send me your PayPal email and your name including your phone# or send me money request so i can pay you right away I am busy at work and do not have much time around me.Make sure you get back to me so that we can arrange for pick up as i will like the item to be picked at your residence location. Also send more pics
Regards
Margret

I reply telling her the offer to buy is accepted and paypal is okay. I ask for her location. I do not give her any info such as name, phone # or paypal account.

Email # 3
I am an oceanographer and working on a project very close to Jacksonville i am currently on a project in the Mediterranean ocean.Don't worry about the Transportation,i do have a shipper that will come for the pick up,once payment is made agent will come for the necessary information and sign all papers on my behalf,do get back to me with your PayPal email and your residence address so the shipping company can figure it out and schedule an appointment with you.
Thanks
Margret

Jacksonville... Mediterranean? It all sounds sketchy. No bickering on price, no inquiry about clear title. Still though, if the money's in my account before I release the bike, how can I go wrong? Strange, this one.

Actually if you are taking PayPal you have to pay for that transaction. What if the buyer tells Paypal they never got the bike? Why not give them your address and have them have their agent contact you.

That agent can get a certified check to you.

In my experience Keith, if it smells funny (no jokes about rice) it usually is. I trust my gut. Having said that if you have the money in your account you should be right. Maybe you should choose a location and time for the bike pick up and not do it at your home. Do not give away the location where you store your bike as they may come visit before deal has happened.

Since when did the Mediterranean Sea get upgraded to an ocean? And Jacksonville is close to the Med? I would think an oceanographer would know that.

A little odd, Margret refers to the bike as just an "item".

This is sounding like a new spin on the Nigerian scams. Treat it with the utmost caution. Hopefully someone else, more reputable, will come along.

Run.

Doesn't Craigslist "encourage" people to "deal locally"?

Don't take a certified check either . They're easy to make on a printer now . A cert. check is OK if they're willing to meet at your bank and verify it's authenticity .

I don't like the grammar.

"I do not have much time around me", "residence address", "residence location"? Sounds like another Nigerian scam to me.

There was a young lady of Niger
Who smiled as she rode on a tiger;
They returned from the ride
With the lady inside,
And the smile on the face of the tiger

.......William Monkhouse , circa 1800's

....well , it's got Nigerians , Tigers and the element of deception so I 'spose it'll work here .

Yeah, it's probably a scam. I didn't think of a bogus paypal payment confirmation until Jim posted some links. Thanks guys, I'll walk away from this one.

I'm sure buyers are rare in south-central BC, but it would be worth advertising in the Vancouver and Seattle areas, then do the deal in person. The only way I'd buy or sell a car or bike over the intarweb is if it was via a site like this.

Hey Keith

Don't touch this or divulge any details.

IT IS A RIP OFF SCAM!!!!!!!!!

Many callers to our local talkback radio have raised this same scam in relation to car sales.

The same scenario where the prospective purchaser was at sea.

The sellers then provided details and had their accounts cleaned out.

Leave it alone.

Remeembering how brother Keith longed for that Trophy, now that it's on the market sounds a little suspect to me. The meditate-eranean tie-in is another cause for concern. As is most Margaret's I know don't spell it Margret, which rhymes with regret, which ends in "T"
And that rhymes with "P" and that stands for pool!
Now, I know all you folks are the right kinda parents.

You could have a point. Maybe the seller is a scammer.

Quick! Someone warn the oceanographer!

I agree it's a scam. If you go forward you will find that the money does not end up in your account, rather you will get a sort-of-official-looking thing from a supposed escrow service where the money will theoretically be released on proof of shipment. I got that far with a camera and realized i was being had. weeks later i was still being dunned by email.

The camera i was supposed to ship to africa but i actually don't think they want the camera or the bike. At some point in the sequence they would get some modest amount of money from you and slink away leaving you covered in poop and shipping fees.

Just for future reference.

One nice feature about paypal is that you can log in and see what money you've sent out AND what money you've received. Anytime I get an e-mail notification, I log in to verify. You can see all your recent account activity.

Margret is spelled with an "a" - Margaret. I always arrange craigslist pick up at my local police department, both seller and buyer will feel more confident if it's on the up and up. I'd be concerned and would make demands that any scammer would steer clear of.

Any type of check(cashiers check or money order) can be counterfeited. But beware, cash is no longer king either. There any many scams going around with a face to face cash transaction. If you get cash, take it to your bank to get it all checked out before releasing property.

I caught a guy with a grip of funny money on Sunday night. Its out there and the counterfeits are very good.

Yep Scott! You could be right! I'm thinkin' Keith could find himself in trouble...trouble with a capitol "T", and that rhymes with "P", and that stands for [a fake] PayPal!

(...but other than THAT, I have NO idea what you're talkin' about!)

If it were me I would not divulge any imformation that could cause me loss , I would take great pleasure in sending false imformation to the perpetrator to lead them on until they wised up and left the scene.
People who try to bullsh*t me get a bizarre double dose of bullsh*t sent back to them in an attempt to fry their tiny criminal minds. Cruel world isn't it.

Dear ---,

Unfortunately, the item you were interested in has been sold locally. However, I have a similar item which you may be interested in, so please provide the specifications of the item which suits your requirements, and I will have the same ready at your disposal for pick up by the agent acting on your behalf. Please note, that I will require a verified non-refundable cash deposit in the amount of $500.00 sent to my post office box in Lagos, Nigeria to facilitate release of the item prior to pick up here in Canada. The balance of the funds would then be provided by your trsued agent in cash at the pick up point.

I'm looking forward to your rely and your deposit, and I know once you have the item in your possession, that you will be quite satisfied with its performance and quality, which far exceeds its price.

Sincerely,

JB "Long live the Duck Force!"

How I reckon the scam works ...

You would then receive an email (supposedly) from Paypal saying the funds had been placed in your account. Then the email would invite you to log into Paypal but the link would take you to a fake Paypal site, you would enter your log in, which would work, and you would see the funds in your (fake) Paypal account and ship the bike. Meanwhile they have now learnt your log in password and are busy cleaning out your linked bank account/credit card via your real Paypal account.

It's the virtual equivalent of those card scanner/camera combos that scammers attach to the front of ATMs.
