If your intent is to KILL the new rider then.......Yes.

For any newbies out there that may have thought that my comment about a Thunderbird for a learner bike was a good idea, wrong it would be a bad bike to learn on due to its extra power and ricey smell.

Hate to be the one pointing this out, but since you may not know this and you keep going on about "rice" in your posts, the Bird is actually built in Hinckley.

Maybe you should realise that I do realise and it still smells like rice because it looks like rice. You obviously hav'nt been keeping up.

Sure you did.

I think we can safely say you very much dislike rice.

Not only is he a bleeping college prof. He is evidently beyond reproach for lacking to do proper research on the subject matter and extrapolating realistic advice for the common man. Deletes our comments? What a punk.

Not exactly my friend. I happen to own a kawasaki 1000 that I like very much. It is an early one though and when they started squaring everything in the eighties I did turn off them.

If I did not ever discover Americas or Speedmasters I most probally would be riding a Thunderbird. The thing is though after owning a Speedy it would be going backwards to "switch" to a Thunderbird. This is only my opinion and I know you don't agree. I am entitled to my opinion. This is off topic here but I had to explain.

Well Stevie, I wonder if your problem with rice may stem from a horrific wedding incident, or some sushi that had gone off.

Maybe its Just that most of the newer Jap bikes are ugly. U G L Y nothing else about it. No way around it they are just ugly, and no one should model there bikes after them.

After all isn't the Triumph thing "Go your own way"?

to get back on topic, the guy does not even have a PhD as far as i can tell - just a B.A. and teaches religious classes. most of his articles seem to be based solely on opinion. there is even one on witches!!

anyway, the important part, this dude get money for the # of page views, which really pi**es me off for some reason.

I sent a note to the main Yahoo contributor network. not sure if it will actually do anything though.

Thanks Jason...

As a "noob" myself, who was in the market for a "first bike" not very long ago, this kind of thing really strikes a nerve with me. Two things that I can tell you about entry-level riders:
1. They will look for any advice they can find that tells them to get the bike the want vs the bike the should get.

2. They make MANY mistakes. In my first year riding, I've; chirped my fronts following a friend who stopped short... overreacted and hit the gas instead of the brake when someone on a side street came out too soon... e-braked when I should have swerved... and probably half a dozen other stupid mistakes. Thankfully, I was on a nice, forgiving bike (trusty Speedy). Imagine if I was riding a Daytona or a Duc 848...

And THEN... when people actually comment with REAL recommendations on a good first bike... he DELETES them because his fragile little ego can't take it...

Crap... this moron reallly will get someone hurt (or much worse).

Ok... I need another scotch!

I tried to sign up so I can post a comment again but the site won't respond.

I wanted to say to Randy, "You advise getting the proper education and training before embarking on any new venture", well Randy, how about you take your own advice and get educated and trained on which bikes are appropriate for beginners - because most of the ones your recommend DEFINITELY AREN'T suitable for beginners. AND your while your hasty disclaimer may or may not protect you from any legal liability (from any related accidents), you won't be void of liability in the eyes of God.

Seriously Randy, get some credible advice and education about beginner bikes. In the meantime - withdraw this article."

So I'll just post it here and maybe copy it to the article's comments page if I can log on at a later date.

Cheers, Richard

Thanks for the complement Lance. I agree with you 100%. I remember my first summer riding in the states (2009). I rode everywhere everyday and then had to switched back to my truck for a week. Well, when I got back to my speedy I was coming to a stop and used the rear break only (car habits with the foot). Scared the crap out of me but I released and then used proper breaking. Don’t know what would have happened if I was on a sport bike.

Apparently "Clueless" is the first word that rattles around in many of our minds.

I don't get the $20K limit, should be $8,000.

And none of those motorcycles fit in the Beginner category...a Ducati, a 675R, a R1??? I hope no "beginner" buys a motorcycle based on his advice and proceeds to wrecking it.
