Paul Newman would be fit the criteria. I've also heard from "someone who knew someone who knew" Nick Adams (of Johnny Yuma fame and friend of James Dean) was described as a man's man. And i would include James Dean even though he portrayed a bit more complexity.
I just thought of Vic Morrow and James Garner as well, to add to some of the ones already mentioned.
