After thinking about it some, (and my favorite of the actors is still Tom Selleck), I would have to add Roy Boehm and Chesty Puller. And Lee Marvin would fit both hero and film categories. Roy Boehm was the first Navy Seal, Chesty Puller commanded the Marine Battalion on "Heartbreak Ridge", battle of Guadalcanal, and Lee Marvin gets alot of respect because he went up Iwo Jima hill. Come to think of it, anybody who was on Iwo Jima is my hero, man's man! I wish there was a "salute" smiley face.

One of my all time heroes was Robert Edison Fulton Jr. He rode from London to Tokyo in 1931 or 1932 (yes, that far back!) on a twin cylinder Douglas. He then wrote the book One Man Caravan. He was also an inventor of several wonderful contraptions. Both ballsy and creative (brains). Wikipedia Link for anyone interested.

The men who best meet the ideal (at least my ideal) of manliness are the ones who risk everything to protect their loved ones and country and to ensure liberty and independence for others. Not too afraid to stand up to tyranny even if they are hooted down by their fellow citizens or pursued and punished by those in authority. Men who put duty and honor above personal gain, comfort or popularity. Men who are honest when dishonesty pays. Men who are courteous, even chivalrous, when being a selfish lout seems to be the norm.
John Wayne played those kind of men in the movies. Russell Crowe has played a few of those parts too. But there are plenty of real life examples out there too. I've been blessed to know quite a few of them. Most live in relative obscurity, some are quite famous. They are the kind of men we should all aspire to be.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I'll throw in: Stonewall Jackson Archie Bunker Matt Damon as Jason Bourne Peter Griffin (to fulfill the beer drinking, bodily gas expelling, dogmatic fool criteria)
There I threw in military, fictional, movie and cartoon. That should cover all categories!!

Larry (ladisney) - you've nailed it!
Macho'ness', skills in sports or other areas, ruggedness, business success or success in other endeavors are all good ... BUT they don't come anywhere near the qualities you outlined. That's my definition of manhood too.

Richard I agree with you and Larry, but there are plenty of actors who lived their lives with esteem and "machismo" Gary Cooper comes to mind.
I'm surprised not to see Chuck Yeager or John Glenn mentioned, both lives well lived.
Others I admire: Teddy Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Douglas Mac Aurthur, Milton Friedman, Reagan, Both Bushes. The list could go on and on. But, the man I admire most is my father, a lifer fighter pilot, and his comrades I have been blessed to know. They were bad ass, but gentlemen.
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

+1 on Mr.Bloor! I didn't think of him until you brought him up but if he hadn't reincarnated our beloved Triumph we would all be talking,[not to each other,as there'd be no B.A.forum], of "what could have been,IF only"

The best answer yet - I suspect that not many of us can say that though (I can't) - although we would love to be able to say it. But we can try to be that to our kids and those we influence - which, at our age, is usually quite a few people.
