After looking at the picture of that roundabout in Bryn's link, it appears that the area between that white line "curb" and the innermost curb isn't wide enough to actually be a "driving" lane. Am I wrong here? And if I'm not wrong, then why would one ride their motorcycle inside that area at all?

I think that inner area might be some sort of crash avoidance space, so you can swerve into it to avoid hitting the car in front,(Whoever thought it up has never ridden a pedal bike, never mind a motorcycle IMO) and the raised bit is to let you know you've gone over it. Or, its so lorries can negotiate the roundabout without their trailer damaging the island.
I'm only guessing as I have never seen one of these in the flesh, I only stumbled across the article.

I totally agree with you Dwight, that area should be clearly marked as it would be impossible to see on a wet night. And if it had recently snowed?
