He told me he was about to buy a Harley. I need you all to help me turn this "lost soul" around and help him see the light. In a few short sentences please tell this guy why he shouldn't buy a Harley and why he should buy a Triumph....

Tell him on a Triumph he will lead the pack, on an HD he'll be just another carbon copy of the hogs.

It’s just a phase he’s going through As a good friend, why not tell him you’ll always be around to help him pick up the pieces(and that he can find these in the oil pump on a twin cam…or in my case as a rather pretty metallic soup when draining the gearbox-sorry-transmission) If he’s thinking about a sporty remind him that since they deleted the tranny trap in ’04 he’ll have to do a complete crankcase strip to fix the gearbox-sorry-transmission- when it goes. Seriously, just point him in the direction of any of the HD owners technical sites so’s he can see what he’ll b taking on.

A friend of mine had a HD Night Rod or something. He went for a test drive on new Thunderbird and after he came back said it was like changing from a Lada (known Russian car) to a Mercedes Benz. Made all the HD people around give him the evil eye. I guess they also knew.

+1 As Ryan (SWA) knows being from the same city as myself, a city that's home to a HD assembly plant, pretty much everyone around here rides a Harley. Even a local credit union offers lower loan rates if you're buying a Harley. When I tell people that I bought a motorcycle, everyone always asks if it's a Harley. When I say that I bought a Triumph, most people ask why would I want to do that. My response is always that I don't want something that everyone else has and besides Triumphs are just cool.

There's an old saying ... You can't buy your friends
Not all ... but a lot of first time Harley buyers are trying to get noticed and it works ... chicks love 'em but then , they don't have to fork out the dollars.

Good timing for this thread! It just so happens that I also got a call from a very good friend and its a mirror of SWA's buddy. I just copied and pasted all the responces to a word doc and I'm going to put it in his FB mail I also told him to be original, if he didnt want a Triumph at least look at a BMW or a Guzzi.

While walking around during the line up at Toys for Tots run last December, we over heard a guy telling his buddy that his bike was near a light pole... points in the general direction of the pole and said it was next to the 2 Triumphs, one's old with a side car and the other is blue.
A HD buddy also heard this and says ... Man, people really notice your ride.

What is this guy's issue? Conformity? Number of dealerships/support? They're giving him a heck of a deal? You can't change his mind until you address the root cause.

Another story... same HD friend who has an 08 Street Glide. We are out on some country road, come to a stop, with a long straight ahead. "See if you can keep up..." I stuck with him, Ton up!

if he is buying a bike so that he can say he has a bike, then buy the hd. but if he is buying a bike to ride a bike, then he is a fool for buying an hd. more often then not hds sit in the garage with very little miles because they are uncomfortable and most also end up in the shop so many times and in time the guy gets to where he cant afford repairs no more so there it sits, he's afraid to ride it because it might break down again but seriously its kinda true about them haveing way fewer miles on the od then say a Triumph for instance which tend to have higer miles. so its up to him as to why he is buying a bike.
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

Totally agree. Going from my HD to my America was the best choice I ever made. If he really wants to ride he needs to spend about 1/2 what an HD costs for a beautiful Triumph. If he just wants to be a part of the "biker" crowd then let him be. Guess he has money to waste.

I had an old shovel for about 6 years and I used to think pain most of the time I rode it. I had an injured back at the time and sold it. 30 years later I'm happy to say no problems riding the Speedmistress. Haven't done enough K's on a Harley recently to really comment on comfort , I'm just happy on my Triumph.

As StevieB said - To each his own. I thought you Americans were proud to be living in a democracy? Who's got the right to tell this guy he's choosing the wrong bike that he could have been dreaming of for years? I say what StevieB says - To each his own.

Unfortunately I think too many people have Harley on the brain when it comes to motor cycles. Now if I came across a used Harley (a three year old Dyna Sport) earlier I may have gotten that instead. I am glad however that I shopped around. My 2004 Speedmaster is without question the best purchase that I have ever made. Great quality with unparalleled style is what you get with Triumph. I love the having the prettiest date at the dance feeling I get with my bike. She still gets long stares from people when I'm riding, still gets complements, and when I'm with other Harley riders, it's my ride that grabs the attention!
She's a Lady and the Lady is 100% mine !

Simple problem solving. But nobody really wants to solve the problem, just have another excuse to run down The Company. Don't get me wrong, I like to do that as well but I don't need an excuse.

Just make sure that the "gay pirate gear" fits him well before he gets on his Milwakee tractor.
It would be a shame spending all that cabbage and then not having the look to go with it.
