WD-40 is great for releasing corroded nuts and bolts etc but I wouldn't use it for cleaning anything thats supposed to be greasy -i.e. a chain, for that very reason.

The way my head sees it is if you've got something in a liquid formm so effective at removing and breaking down oil/grease then this is exactly what you DON'T want happeneing on something like a chain that needs to be well lubricated.

I have always thought the same thing. I am heavily into bicycle riding (over 300 miles a week), and a lot of folks use WD-40 to clean their chains. It always seem silly to have something on the chain that fights grease when you are about to oil it in that it would seem difficult to get it all off prior to the lubrication phase.
