WD-40 is great for releasing corroded nuts and bolts etc but I wouldn't use it for cleaning anything thats supposed to be greasy -i.e. a chain, for that very reason.
The way my head sees it is if you've got something in a liquid formm so effective at removing and breaking down oil/grease then this is exactly what you DON'T want happeneing on something like a chain that needs to be well lubricated. Surely this would just lead to excessive wear and premature failure.
Thats just how my head sees it. And also, this little snippet from the Triumph website too...
Caution
The use of silicone products such as WD40 will cause discolouration of the chrome and must not be used. Similarly, the use of abrasive cleaners such as Solvol Autosol will damage the system and must not be used.
However I'm still a big fan of the stuff.
