For an even layout on both sides, you have leave the fender on for this method, use a string from for instance a hard common point on both sides of the bike such as the center of the top rear shock mount, you can triangulate an exact common point from there using a tape measure and level. I hard scribed exactly the finish cuts, but cut 1/16th long, you can finish up with a mill file right to the scribed line in a few minutes, no heat generation to foul the paint that way, touch up paint the cut line and your done. BTW, get the bike sitting sitting level and plumb on a stand or some wood or whatever ya got first.
