Obviously, with a title like that, I had to read the article. (That and cabin fever). It came up in a link from another article on the eccentricities of dictators.
In 2006, Kim Jong-Il found out that there is a guy in Germany who breeds giant rabbits, the size of dogs. He is so impressed with these giant rabbits that he decides that they are the solution to his country's widespread hunger problems. So Kim gets in touch with 68-year-old Karl Szmolinsky of Berlin, the world's foremost breeder of giant rabbits, and says he wants Szmolinsky to come to Pyongyang and set up a farm to breed these rabbits. Kim believes that the meat yielded by these rabbits will end his people's starvation. Well, if that were the case, this post would be a bit different. The whole story is in this article http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/article1615350.ece
After reading the article, I had to google 'Giant German Rabbits'. Cynical b*st*rd that I am, my first thought was photoshop. Surprisingly though, Snopes.com has these pictures as verified. And here are a couple of pictures of these rabbits. I have no doubt that one of them probably would feed a few people....
I'm thinking these would make terrific pets, especially if you train them to bark. Oh but then there is the size of the hole these big mothers might dig?
