I believe that is the trick. I had the same darn issue in the past, wrestled with it for a couple of days and it finally broke free. Strange as heck., it's just one of those things that makes you scratch your head.
Well, how does this grab ya. Gave up, took it to the Triumph/BMW/Ducati place in Loveland, and they thought at first it was jammed bushing. Pulled it apart, and there is a bushing at the bottom of the Dampening Rod (called the Fork Cylinder on the parts list) that maintains alignment which was MISSING FROM THE FACTORY!!!! Yep, that thing being gone only becomes a problem when the Fork is fully compressed (like during fork fluid changes!!!). And, best part is that you have to buy the whole Fork Cylinder assy (checked Bike Bandit too!) for a nice $87! Yeah, I AM going to call Triumph, even though I know it will be fruitless. This fork has never been opened at all, and even if it had been during a fluid change, this is part which is bolted through the bottom of the fork and would not have been touched regardless. I know what they'll say, but might as well try and get them to at least split the cost. The other fork came apart and went back together just fine. And Mike, if you did have this problem and loosening the bolt did the trick it may have been that your bushing is missing too, and loosening the bottom bolt allowed everything to line back up. Hmmm....
