A "heightened sense of vulnerability" is most certainly NOT why I ride. Maybe heightened senses in general, the speed, the control, the perceived freedom. But vulnerability? Screw that. I like being safe. It might be why YOU ride, but there's no need to generalize. I try to mitigate the risks involved as much as I can. I'm not an adrenaline junkie. And I don't give a crap if anyone thinks it's cool or not. I was going to buy a BMW before I found my TBA. I'm glad I did because there are few things less cool than a BMW.
