I'm putting together a tool kit to take with me on long rides and was looking for opinions on what you think would be essential items to have on the road. I've looked at some of those pre pacaked ones and there seems to be stuff in most of them that would just be taking up room. Any suggestions???

fuse kit, light bulbs, zip ties, duct tape, .020 safety wire, small crescent, small needle nose w/cutters, channel locks, 3/8 ratchet w/2" and 4" extensions, 1/4 adapter, socket set, #1&2 phillips bits, 3 allen wrenches, torx bit set, 10/11 and 12/13mm open end wrenches, axle nut tools, a small multi-meter, SAK, in an old army tool bag. Generally carry a cel phone and AMA MoTow card for the daily commute, but strap the tool bag on for anything longer. Don't have a patch kit, but the tires have 'Ride-On' installed and I haven't had a tire problem... yet.

I bought the Cruz tool kit from Brent and added fuses. Very neat kit & doesn't take up much space. The only thing I added in the tool bag was a tubeless puncture repair kit

I use a front toolroll and the small Triumph slant bags to stash all of the following stuff. All the sockets, wrenches, torx, and things like that reside up front in the small blow molded toolbox that came with the Freak. The rest of the tools are in another larger blow molded case I bought online and fits perfectly in the right bag. Most of the other stuff is either in the left bag or stuffed around the toolbox on the right bag. I typically leave all this stuff right where it is all the time. When I am travelling, I put all the rest of the crap (clothes and such) in a duffle.
(The only order here is alphabetical): 3" socket extender 6" crescent wrench cell phone chain wax channel locks delorme map book (Florida) first-aid kit flashlight goggles (the other pieces) hat lighters leatherman lubricant metric allen wrenches metric box/open end wrenches - 8mm-14mm metric sockets - 8mm-17mm 18mm socket (spark plugs) 24mm for rear spindle metric torx keyset metric torx sockets plastic sheeting (covers you AND the bike) pliers rainsuit screwdriver (flat/phillips) sidecutters spare fuses spark plug gauge spark plugs (pre-gapped) sunscreen tape (electrical and duct) tie wraps tire air pump tire flat fixer can tire pressure gauge towels/rags vice grips (small and needlenose)

I have a small assortment that includes some of the items already mentioned. The one item I never leave home without- - The 24hr. Road Assistance Card -

Holy crap some of you guys carry a lot of shizzle. I guess I'm looking for bare minumum stuff that would fit in like a front fork bag or a freak tool box. I appreciate the feed back. Here's what I got. adjustable wrench spark plug socket and socket wrench spare spark plugs - pre gapped duct tape - small roll screw driver - multiple tip allen wrenches pliers Anythng that happens that I can't temporarly fix with these items, I wouldn't want to on the side of the road anyway. Thanks again Always have a cell and a lighter in my pocket. -Josh

Phil, thats a good all around kit the only other thing I would add for long runs is a chain breaker and a couple masterlinks and halve links for our size chain. These take up little room but might save a long walk.

I have a cell phone and towing coverage from AAA. I don't want to insult the spirit of my BA!
Any landing you can walk away from is a good one.

Man, I can spot a few guys off this thread I need to invite along on my next ride. ...hehehehe, I'd pack some of that too, but wouldn't know which end to hold for half of it.
And what's the deal with duct tape? Everyone packs duct tape. Stick with the industrial grey, keep away from those designer colors. Years ago when I was poor and didn't know any better, I extended the life of some cowboy boots with duct tape. Oh? I also pack duct tape, if for no other reason than it seems like a Patriotic thing to do. If your ever in a group and somebody yells "anybody have some duct tape?", I swear 25 rolls will appear from nowhere.

So, you used it on boots, too? Man, I thought it was just us poor guys from East Dallas. I learned about duct tape back in my motocross days. And I got to say, you wouldn't believe what duct tape (OD Green 100 mile-an-hour tape) can fix on a helicopter, when you absolutley, positively, without-a-doubt have to go right now. From experience, if it keeps you going 90 knots and 5000 feet, it'll darn sure work on the surface at 75 mph.

jj,
I'm thinking Brent @ newspeedmaster might want to consider carrying duct tape, maybe with T logos on it? Or a blacked out version for speedies & chrome version for ba's. Hey Brent you listening?

Well nick, thought I travelled light, all I take is two allen keys an adjustable spanner, three fuses and a puncture assistance card that I got with my insurance, all tucked neatly away in my inside pocket. Think some people gone a bit OTT, after all, there not riding Hardleys, oh dear, us Brits with our wry sence of humour. Andy
