Chaps may look like they're for gay pirates, but they work great, and are usually cheaper than textile pants or leather pants. I will also suggest heated gear, gloves at least, then jacket or vest, pants and socks optional.

Ill give you fair notice...the pants I have are unbeatable in performance BUT they are pricey. Heres the website: Cycleport/Motoport Here is a two part review I did on them: Part 1Ive been out in the high 30s. low 40s and had no issues with only jeans underneath. Those overpants with my heated gloves and Im a happy camper.

Thermal long-johns under your usual leg wear are pretty good. A quick cheap alternative is a pair of your mrs' tights, just don't tell anyone you're wearing them For a different part of your body, I cut the sleeves off an old nackered leather jacket and use it as an outer vest, bit of double insulation for the chest

I was going to suggest those too, but if you ride to work and are inside all day, you may get a little too warm. Definitely a good thing for just riding in the cold though!

Back in NZ I found that good quality thermal pants under leather pants was a good way to go in the winter. The ones I have are merino 100% wool but you know how us Kiwis never like to be too far away from a sheep!!!

Well, Sir.... it should be warming up soon, as it is still cold up there and will be again as well. This is what I feel works best for me. Thermal "long johns" then a thick pair of jeans with leather chaps over that. As for the upper I wear several layers starting with thermal "long johns" then T-shirt, long sleeve pull over ( preferably nice and thick), a wool scarf (with the tails pulled together and layered over my chest), and finally my leather jacket. However you may want to try something like this instead. http://cozywinters.com/heated-clothing/?...e%2BGear%2B2010

Thumbs up for heated gear! That and the really nice wool blend underwear that Stanfield's makes. Hey, it's made in Canada so you know works for the cold!!

I picked up some armoured Tourmaster pants, when I bought my first TBA, that I personally know will protect your hide in a laydown. I've been wearing chaps around town (looking at adding some Diamond Gusset Kevlar Jeans or Bohn armour), but will wear the Tourmaster on longer rides. And yes, they kept me warm & dry in winter riding weather.
Blue/White 2007 TBA, Thruxton needles, Unifilter, AI removed, Polaris Bellmouth, Bubs, Nology Coils/wires, Lightbar, Ricor Intiminators, Hagon Nitros, Tall Sissy Bar w/luggage rack, Dart flyscreen & Lowers. 130 Mains, TrueGel Battery MG12-BS.

I was doing ski pants over jeans, but then I got a set of Eddie Bauer snow board pants. I wear a pair of Eddie Bauer long johns with these snow board pants that are fleece lined and I am warm as toast. The best part is that these pants have regular pockets front and rear and belt loops to boot! With my heated vest and gloves, I laugh at the cold!
