That cut-off piece can be used for a couple things. 
I was going to use it as a front air dam, fit perfectly around the "tool bag" at the bottom/front of the frame. But, I ended up using it as a rear fender extension at the front of the rear tire, from where the original rear fender stops, down toward the swing arm, to help keep road grime from spraying on my swing arm/rear crankcase. With the air box removed, this was needed.
I made a Triumph Patent Plate shaped brass plate to fill in the recessed area, and it offsets the gloss black paint very nicely, I must say. 
And you may see me tonight
