You get a little plastic gizmo (box) that you keep on your vehicle somewhere, and when you pass under a overhead structure located at the toll booth locations, it automatically "transponders" you to your ultimate destination.
Can you say "Beam me up Scotty!"
(Well, close. Actually, you just drive straight by the toll booths without having to stop or even slow down. In Florida, if you need to pay cash, or need a printed receipt, you merge over to the booths, which are located on the sides of the main road, do your business, then merge back into the main traffic. You get a monthly statement from your "E-pass" account. Sometimes this "Monthly statement" will give you a heart murmur!)
