The 2011 Euro-Rally will take place from Friday 29th July to Monday 1st August, 2011 in Meteora in the north-west of Greece.

I apologize for the delay in posting this but I have been trying to get up there for a recce to complete my info gathering and have been bogged down until now.

We have chosen Meteora for it's location and relatively close proximity to Igoumenitsa port for incoming ferries from Italy (I would have liked Athens but that's an extra 6-hour ferry ride to Patras for everyone - each way).
Another "upside" is that it's about 5-10 degrees Centigrade cooler than in the south.

Coming into Kalambaka, the town below the Meteora range.

Those are ancient monasteries on top of the mountain slivers.

I'll be coming back in the next couple of weeks with more info on accommodation etc.

I know it's a bit of a long one but ... let's see who are the brave ones (my turn to get back at some for dragging me all over the place, over the years ).

This WAS going to be the year I finally went, too bad it wasn't confirmed sooner though.
I needed to organise things before now so I've made other plans.

Well I'm in favor of going from Venice - but would mean sailing already on Wednesday mid-afternoon getting there Thursday afternoon:
Departure Arrival Vessel Company
1. VENICE-IGOUMENITSA 27-07-2011, 14:00 28-07-2011 , 11:55 EUROPA PALACE MINOAN LINES
2. IGOUMENITSA-VENICE 02-08-2011, 09:00 03-08-2011 , 08:00 EUROPA PALACE MINOAN LINES

Or on Thursday mid-afternoon from Ancona - getting there Friday morning:
Departure Arrival Vessel Company
1. ANCONA-IGOUMENITSA 28-07-2011, 15:30 29-07-2011 , 08:00 CRUISE OLYMPIA MINOAN LINES
2. IGOUMENITSA-ANCONA 02-08-2011, 23:59 03-08-2011 , 14:30 CRUISE OLYMPIA MINOAN LINES

What I do know from lots of experience (once every year), is that we - the family & I - have always gone from Ancona with the car and know that if you book outbound & return with the same company you get a small reduction.

It always meant SETTING OFF from Zurzach, Switzerland at 05:00 AM ! !
Includes two stops: One at Swiss Italy boarder (refuel as it's cheaper), one south of Bologna and then Ancona.
All motor ways....

Just my 2p

Exactly, "who knows" seeing as you appear to be bending time by travelling to Greece 28/29 July but using the Channel Tunnel to get to mainland Europe a month later

Well plans have been changed this end.

I have booked the Channel tunnel crossing and the Ancona to Igoumenitsa ferry with yous guys - who knows, all our cabins might be close enough together to have a party, eh?
I'm not sure of the layout on those first class cabins
If'n it goes pear-shaped, all I lose is the tunnel and ferry fares.
It's easier than trying to get on later I guess.

Cabins? Cabins? You come on here late, flouting your money, when us poor people have to make do with a seat!! ( and to make it worse you have a 1st Class cabin!!) Got any spare room??

Good to have you on board ( at least for now) - now can you have Wendy make you up a document wallet on some cord so you don't forget them again.

PS - I hope the America is the chosen bike??

I thought we were ALL having our own 4 berth first class cabins!
You know, for the extra bit o' room for our stuff!
You're gonna tell me next that all you've done is reserve a seat ....
Wait ... why is no one else laughing

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner!!
I was wondering who was going to be first to come in with that one

Don't hold your breath!
Then again, the amount of time the R3 has been at the dealers, who knows WHAT I'll be riding.
I was chatting to Jan about BMWs ....

And talking of Wendy, is she going to make alternate plans to join us?

Her coeliac and ulcerative colitis is making her life a misery at the minute and even if she flew down to meet us, she would struggle with food.
Like she just said, "it's not like it's a day out and I could pack my own sandwiches".
I note with interest that the kids will be with their dad for a week during the trip too.
Get the impression she wants a week or so peace and quiet?

Two rallies in one trip eh? Sounds like a plan - I was aiming to get back to England either Saturday or Sunday after having a leisurely ride up from Italy,so I guess we will have to take a fast trip back!!

And they include all meals - that could cost them if both Ade & I go!!!

Firstly, what size t shirts they got?
Secondly, if they include ale we could friggin' bankrupt 'em!

Camping!?!? So I gotta lug my bleedin' tent now too? Sheesh

Like the idea though, should be good

XXXL Good one
Wait, you're serious?!
Oh well, at least the food is free

I assume you're paying on the gate?
I'll decide nearer the time if'n I'll be going.
It would be daft not to as I'll be there but I'll see how work is. If I'm busy I might have to get back.

You were the last person to use my tent when y'all came over for the bbq!
I'd better check it out in plenty of time it's been two years since it was used.

Just to let you know I'll be going up to the Meteora area to check out accommodation possibilities and ride routes (although I already have those more or less planned out in my head).

I'll update you all next week.

I went up to Meteora the previous weekend to last, have checked out accommodation options, ride routes and manjare (eating) venues.
Were looking very good, I am actually quite excited.
We have a couple of options for campers I would like to consider a little while longer (not under any particular pressure as is pretty much low season in this specific area).
Will revert soon with details.

just to say that those travelling from greece to the malheur treffen in belgium on the way back.. i was looking to pre book a ticket today but barclays bank (robbers) wanted £15 for an intermational bank transfer... so they were told where to go.. Anyway i emailed peter in belgium and he said we can pay on the gate, same terms as pre book.. but he needs you to send him your booking in forms and if you put travelling with hedgehog on the bottom it would make it easier for him to identify whos coming with me.... Thanks Dave

OK, first, I don't think I can top those monasteries, even with some of the gorgeous scenery we have here in Colorado! Second, I seriously need to find an excuse to get myself to the general vicinity of Greece! Excellent photos Thanassis!
